Don't boycott FB - you Irish wannabees- NING in the New Year!

Michael T. Beirne wrote

If FaceBook ever goes <even more> for-pay - either by subscription or those tricky apps that rip off your cel phone account- there are plenty of alternatives to go to.

My personal favorite are the Ning-based sites. They have the best web 2.0 tool set- plenty of good stuff for video, photos, blogs, events and more- for free, of course!. Best of all, you can join an existing group AND also create your own - multiple, all for free- sites on the fly very easily.

Best place to get started? Drop by The People's Lounge!... See More
http://thepeopleslounge.ning.com/
* The Lounge is very artist friendly, eclectic & international.

* My little corner of The Lounge is here:
http://thepeopleslounge.ning.com/profile/MikeBeirne

(Uncle Tim, Mom and Grandpa Tom are members. We did the birthday album for St. Thomas on the Lounge too.)

For the holidays this year we did digital picture frames for GM&GP, Tom and Janny. The pictures I loaded onto the frames - and more - are on the Ning sites that I set up for mom and dad's family names:
beirne.ning.conm
malmstadt.ning.com

It is dead easy. You can get your own addresses, sites, mobile to web uploads, all that stuff and more.

Boycott FaceBook if and when you want, but it is usually better to hedge your bets and have a Plan B.

NING in the New year!

Happy Holidays-

Bits, Bytes & Blogs-
The Monterey pines are dead, but not forgotten. They live on as the building blocks of our new green landscaping. Everything in the garden is reused or 100% natural. Ivy vines form the rigging for the tomatoes and peas, hard disk drives tile the walkways and the stumps came together as decks and walkways through the garden. They also present a pretty formidable solid barrier to the ever-encroaching ivy.

Report: Server sales declined 24.5 percent in first quarter

By Brandon Bailey - Mercury News: 05/27/2009 -- The server computer industry took a huge hit in the first three months of 2009, when sales plunged nearly 25 percent and total revenue fell below $10 billion for the first time in more than a decade, according to a new report from a leading market research firm. The global recession hurt all the major server vendors — including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Dell, Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu — as corporate and government customers put off buying new models of the workhorse computers that are used to power Web sites, data centers and a variety of business functions. IBM tops as HP slips after EDS buy

Fran Foo | May 26, 2009 -- HEWLETT-PACKARD'S hope of morphing itself into a formidable rival to IBM has yet to materialise, with figures from research outfit Gartner showing its acquisition of EDS has had lacklustre impact. According to Gartner research on the IT professional services market in Australia, HP,
including EDS, went backwards by 1.8 per cent in terms of growth rates post merger (see table below). Increasing its market share in these types of services was the main reason for HP's $US13.9billion acquisition of EDS last May. According to Gartner, HP registered $1.29 billion in revenue, representing a
7.6 per cent market share last year. In the previous year it recorded $1.32 billion in revenue with an 8.2 per cent share.

"Competitors will attack Amazon's market position by launching new features, expanding content beyond books, dominating markets outside the U.S., reducing costs, and improving relationships with publishers."

New software, services help you manage passwords, protect online identity

By Brandon Bailey, Mercury News: 05/31/2009 -- Your dog's name. Random nouns. And who could forget
blm457yfp? Most people who use the Internet know the difficulty of remembering all the passwords they need to check e-mail, chat online, download music and transfer funds. Experts advise against using the same password for multiple accounts, in case it falls into the wrong hands. But all those different sign-ons are hard to keep straight and, even with password-manager software to help, they can be hard to keep secure.

SCANNING ON THE GO
As a veteran traveler who has 3 million miles on American Airlines flights over the past 16 years, I’ve become somewhat of an expert organizer when it comes to packing my travel gear. My luggage is always filled with the essential items that I like to travel with, except for a refill or two of those 3 ounce or less bottles. One thing that has changed over the past few years is the need for a portable scanner. As an executive of a company, I have to be sure that I’m also well equipped with everything I need for my “mobile office”. - Doug Rudolph, Vice President of Product Management and Business Development

Location is the next mobile revolution By Chris O'Brien - Mercury News: 05/25/2009 -- For years, mobile phone users have been asking, "Can you hear me now?" Soon they'll be asking, "Can you find me now?" Over the past year, there has been a quiet revolution in the development of so-called "location-based services," or LBS to the cognoscenti. The ability of a new generation of smart-phones to pinpoint a user's location through the global positioning system or wireless networks has unleashed a wave of innovation in mobile computing.

The Twitterverse has spoken: Twitter TV is a bad idea

Plans for a Twitter-based reality TV show were the talk of Hollywood (and Silicon Valley) on Memorial Day, but 24 hours after the news broke, the Twitterverse is up in arms and even the micro-blogging site's co-founder, Biz Stone, seems to be hedging. "There is no official Twitter TV show - although if there were it would be fun to cast!" Stone wrote late Monday on his blog. "We have a lightweight, non-exclusive, agreement with the producers which helps them move forward more freely."

Copyright Meets a New Foe: The Real-Time Web May 21, 2009 -- The Digital Millennium Copyright Act may seem inadequate to address the issues that arise from the furious rate Internet users are sharing content - By Liz Gannes -- Copyright law wasn't written with today's content consumption in mind. The way online video copyright functions is based on a reading of the 10-year-old Digital Millennium Copyright Act that equates video hosting sites with Internet service providers. That law provides a "safe harbor" for hosts who respond to copyright claims by taking down infringing content "expeditiously." There doesn't seem to be widespread motivation to modernize that process. Viacom is suing YouTube for $1 billion, claiming YouTube should take more responsibility than the current reading of DMCA requires. But that case is plodding along in the courts. Meanwhile, Internet users are sharing and consuming content at a furious rate. And what's being called the "real-time Web" is even less equipped to deal with copyright infringement.

Pew Center illustrates how Craigslist is killing newspapers May 22, 2009 by Greg Sandoval -- It's tough to compete with free. The use of online classifieds sites, such Craigslist, has more than doubled in the past four years, according to a study published Friday by the Pew Research Center. At the same time that Web classifies are on the rise, the classifieds business that newspapers once depended on has collapsed, the Pew Internet & America Life Project found. "Nearly half (49 percent) of Internet users say they have ever used online classified sites," the Pew Center said in the report. In 2005, the percentage was 22 percent. One out of 10 Internet users visits an online classifieds service each day, up from four percent in 2005.

The New Scientist reports that E Ink Corporation of Cambridge, Massachusetts, says it will be demonstrating a colour version of its e-paper at the Society for Information Display conference in San Antonio, Texas, on 31 May, and that products based on its colour e-paper will be on the market by the end of 2010.

Shinoda Plasma showcases 125-inch curved PTA display

Darren Murph, May 16th -- Surely you remember Shinoda Plasma and its obscenely large PTA display, right? Unfortunately, this one's no 142-incher, but 125-inches of curvaceous screen real estate still isn't anything to sneeze at -- especially when we're talking about an actual prototype. The 3- x 1-meter display consists of three PTA (plasma tube array) modules connected together, and it features a rather uninspiring 960 x 360 resolution but weighs just 7.9-pounds.

Japan’s love hotels are a big hit

May 21 2009 - Chris Cooper and Makiko Kitamura - Tokyo --
AT 6:30 p.m. on a Friday, Frank Sinatra Strangers in the Night fills the lobby of the Hotel Mario outside Tokyo. A couple scans a board showing photos of the 50 rooms, rentable for a few hours. Only three are left. Japan’s 25,000 love hotels are making money even as companies such as Sony Corp., NEC Corp. and Nissan Motors cut jobs amid the worst recession since World War II. Lovers can get a couple of hours of privacy for as little as 3,000 yen ($30), the cost of entry at a Tokyo nightclub, in a country where adults often live with their parents until their 30’s.
