05 March 2009 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe GmbH has signed a major licensing agreement for the ARM Cortex-R4F processor to use in automotive applications including safety and chassis. In addition to the Cortex-R4F processor, the agreement includes the ARM AMBA Designer tool and ARM CoreSight technology for advanced on-chip debug and real-time trace. The agreement is a significant endorsement of the ARM architecture in the automotive market as manufacturers endeavour to consolidate their automotive functions into a reduced number of more capable processors.

- BBC.co.uk: Satyam approved to sell 51% stake [toc...]
6 March - Fraud-hit IT firm Satyam has been given the go-ahead to sell most of itself. Indian financial authorities approved plans for the company to sell a 51% stake as it seeks to win back clients and restore customer confidence. Reports suggest computing giant IBM and Indian engineering firm Larsen & Toubro are frontrunners for the stake. Satyam has struggled since former boss Ramalinga Raju admitting inflating their assets by more than $1bn. Shares in Satyam jumped 18% after the company's state-appointed board got approval to sell the majority holding. Satyam lost more than 80% of its market value following Mr Raju's confession in January. The auction for the stake will be global and potential buyers would need to have assets of at least $150m. The buyer then would not be able to sell its stake for at least three years, Satyam said in a statement. Satyam had been one the biggest players in the booming Indian IT software market, supplying back-office services t! o firms from around the world.

Social-networking site Facebook has introduced real-time status streams that could explode the micro-blogging phenomenon started by Twitter into the mainstream. The service Twitter offers, which allows users to post updates of around 140 words long, has grown to become the world's third-largest social-networking site after Facebook and MySpace, with six million registered users and 55 million monthly visitors.

So, its no wonder that at the next industry event, CeBIT in Germany, the theme was also green technology. At the largest wireless trade event, the GSMA introduced a new initiative to standardise a 'universal' charger so that the majority of new phones will use a 'one-size-fits-all' energy-efficient charger by 2012. The benefits from adopting this standard include improving energy efficiency when charging, halving standby power consumption and cutting back on the overall number of chargers being manufactured.

Starting in the 1970s, the Masssachussetts Institute of Technology mechanical-engineering professor had made significant contributions to solar, including a cell-making technique now used by Evergreen Solar. But once research funding for solar photovoltaics--converting sunlight into electricity--dried up in the 1980s, Sachs diverted into other fields, including 3D printing to help designers quickly build prototypes.

"We will continue on this because everyone out there... is facing a really tough time and we don't want to see anyone adding to this burden by unnecessary charges," he added. The report, released by Fujitsu Consulting on Thursday, said Australian households paid about 22 percent more in bank fees than households in Britain and 1! 1 percent more than American households, partly because of weakening bank competition.

Nissan North America has committed to making its electric vehicles available to municipal or private organizations in the Tucson, Ariz., area, Ecotality said. Nissan's all-electric sedan is scheduled to be available in certain areas of the U.S. next year.

Microsoft officials made this public acknowledgment via the Engineering Windows 7 blog. In a posting, dated March 6, Jack Mayo, the Group Program Manager for the Documents and Printing team, listed a set of Windows 7 features that will be able to be turned on and off by users after the initial Windows set-up.

Q4 saw worldwide server revenue decrease by 15 percent to reach $ 13.1 billion. Shipments too fell 11 percent to reach 2.1 million units. For whole year performance, 2008 saw server revenue drop by 4 percent as compared to 2007 figures and shipments increase by only 2.6 percent.

March 5th, 2009 David Fearon -- One of the primary themes of CeBIT this year was supposed to be Green IT. Interest in the subject is “overwhelming” according to the CeBIT website. And indeed there’s an entire hall dedicated to it this year, albeit one of the smaller ones. But still hall 8 - “Green IT World” - is sparsely occupied. The subdued ambience is a long way from the heaving mass of bodies in hall 21, where the likes of MSI and Gigabyte are showing off their shiny stuff amid loud music and pneumatic young ladies wearing shirts which appear, very regrettably, to have shrunk in the wash.
March 5, 2009 | author: Petrony -- Computer manufacturers facing worst recession - Gartner Research reports that computer makers are facing their worst times this year and PC shipments are expected to fall 12% in 2009, exceeding the previous record of 2001 when they were down 11.1%. The global server sales have also been found to have fallen 15.1% in the fourth quarter of the last year while mobile phone shipments decreased 4.6%. IDC, research firm has found out that the semiconductor industry in Asia, US and Europe will also get affected by the situation in 2009 with the decline of 22%. This is mainly expected to happen due to double-digit shipment declines and price erosion. Mario Morales, IDC's vice president for semiconductor research added that the revenues are not expected show year-over-year growth until the second quarter of 2010.

By Robin Kwong in Taipei: March 5 2009 -- Taiwan on Thursday unveiled a long-awaited plan to restructure the country’s struggling D-Ram chip industry, announcing a new government-backed company to buy key technology from foreign competitors and consolidate the domestic market. The new initiative has the potential to transform the global memory chip industry by allying Taiwan’s large production base with technology from either Japan or the US, which would pose a threat to South Korea’s Samsung, the world’s biggest D-Ram maker. The new company, named Taiwan Memory Company, will seek to invest in either Elpida of Japan or Micron of the US within the three months, in exchange for D-Ram patents and technologies, said John Hsuan, who has been appointed chairman of TMC.
March 4, 2009 by Jon Oltsik -- I've long been a big proponent of self-encrypting drives as the best way to encrypt data-at-rest on PCs and storage systems. This belief became a lot more real in January when the Trusted Computing Group published three storage encryption standards for laptops, enterprise storage, and software interoperability. Fujitsu, Hitachi, Seagate, and Toshiba support these standards and are already shipping self-encrypting drives. In February, IBM joined the fray, further validating the self-encrypting drive standard. IBM announced that its massive DS8000 storage system will now offer self-encrypting drives to protect the confidentiality and integrity of data-at-rest. LSI, another leading storage system vendor, is also on board.
March 06, 2009 -- BANK customers in Australia pay the western world's highest banking fees, a new report says, and the opposition claims the government's doing nothing about it. Australians cop fees that are 22 per cent higher than those paid by Britons, and 11 per cent higher than what Americans pay, says the report released yesterday. The opposition says the federal government has failed to pressure banks to drop their charges. ...Report author Fujitsu Consulting said average Australian households paid about $1,000 in bank fees each year, compared to $749 in Britain and $850 in the United States.

Silicon Valley Leadership Group CEO Carl Guardino said he worried worse was to come: "If the January unemployment numbers resemble a horror movie, then I fear the sequels that will be released in February and March, as they will probably be even more frightening."

March 05, 2009 - MOSCOW -- Russia is working to develop anti-satellite weapons to match efforts by other nations, a deputy defense minister was quoted as saying Thursday. Gen. Valentin Popovkin said Russia continues to oppose a space arms race but will respond to moves made by other countries, according to Russian news reports. "We can't sit back and quietly watch others doing that; such work is being conducted in Russia," Popovkin was quoted as saying. Russia already has some "basic, key elements" of such weapons, he said without elaboration.

3 March -– Food and hospitality group Whitbread has extended its voice and data networks outsourcing contract with Fujitsu Services for a further four years. Fujitsu manages the voice and data networks across the Whitbread hotels and restaurants estate, which includes chains such as Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre, Beefeater, Table Table, Taybarns and Costa Coffee. ComputerWire -- Fujitsu has agreed to acquire Australian telecoms operator Telstra's IT services arm KAZ Group for AUD 200m ($128m) to expand its presence in the Australian market. The company said the acquisition will make it the third largest IT company by revenue in Australia, employing nearly 5,000 staff. It said it also creates a strategic alliance between Fujitsu and Telstra Enterprise & Government. This LCD divides out to 16:9 all right, but its resolution is too low. And it's only 4 inches big, for God's sake, you need to squint to see the actors and -- Oh. Sorry. Our bad. We were looking at the wrong screen. The other one is a good 16 inches diagonally. The Blu-ray player works fine with it. For $1,499, the Fujitsu LifeBook N7010 is a laptop that gives you two displays. - Acquisition of Telstra subsidiary to give Fujitsu boost in Australia
March 3, 2009 - Bloomberg -- Fujitsu Ltd. will buy a Telstra Corp. subsidiary for 200 million Australian dollars (¥12.45 billion) to become the third-biggest information-technology company in Australia. Fujitsu will have almost 5,000 workers in Australia after the acquisition of Kaz Group Pty., the companies said in a statement to the Australian stock exchange Monday. Fujitsu doesn't plan to cut any of Kaz's 1,400 employees, said Trent Mumford, a spokesman in Sydney for Fujitsu. The company is refocusing on computer services after widening its loss forecast for the year ending March 31 to ¥50 billion last month. Melbourne-based Telstra, Australia's largest phone company, said it is getting rid of a business that is no longer a core part of its strategy. "This acquisition is all about growth and job security for a strengthened Fujitsu/Kaz business," Fujitsu's Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive Rod Vawdrey said.

The deal makes Fujitsu Australasia’s third largest IT services provider after IBM and HP – and marks a divorce in strategy from Telecom NZ, which picked up Gen-i from Eric Watson the same year Telstra bought Kaz. The $A200 million deal, still subject to Foreign Investment Review Board approval, will see 1400 Kaz staff become part of Fujitsu Australian and New Zealand, giving the Japanese-owned company a total headcount of 5000 in the region. Kaz’ major customers include AMP and ING.

But it transpires it is an appropriate launch location, as one of the important sub-texts of the system is the way it identifies the need for an agnostic platform running all the leading virtualization hypervisors. The FlexFrame approach is built around creating a pre-engineered environment for a major application suite. The company already has a FlexFrame capable of running Oracle-based applications, and others will follow this introduction of the SAP implementation. It provides an operating environment for both the core application and the users' specific applications and implementations. 27 February - Northern Ireland's criminal justice IT programme will now cost 36% more than the original estimate, according to a government minister. Minister of state for Northern Ireland Paul Goggins said the most recent estimate on the programme's price tag is £58m, against an initial figure of £42.7m. He attributed this to three main factors. The first is that the complexity of integrating the six agencies' business processes and computer systems cost £5m more than expected. Secondly, changes in the contract added £6m to the bill. Thirdly, an extra £4m accrued from development and office costs arising from a delay in the programme. Goggins said, however, that at one stage Causeway was estimated to cost £61m. The reduction resulted from a review of the programme's content. Causeway, which was launched in 2003, is providing a joined up IT platform to support the sharing of information between Northern Ireland’s criminal justice agencies. Computers, like most electronics, consume a very small amount of energy even when switched off because of losses in the transformer or sensors that remain active for functions such as remote power-on. 2 March - India's scandal-hit Satyam Computer Services is to invite formal bids from potential suitors this week, pushing ahead with a possible sale even though it could be months before its accounts are restated.
