- EB and Fujitsu renew their Patja collaboration
Helsinki, Finland, February 25, 2009 — EB, Elektrobit Corporation that specializes in embedded software and hardware solutions for automotive industry and wireless technologies has renewed its IT infrastructure partnership with ICT services provider Fujitsu Services Oy. The agreement signed at the beginning of February marks a continuation to the Patja collaboration that started in 1998. EB’s Patja service incorporates all in all 1,600 workstations, 86 servers, and mobile devices. The services also cover customer support, Mobile Enterprise services, product services, Exchange email as well as several Microsoft solutions as a service, such as MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server) and OCS (Office Communications Server).

Tokyo, February 26, 2009 — There have been reports in the media regarding the future of Fujitsu's PC business in Europe. Fujitsu sells PCs in Europe through Fujitsu Siemens Computers, our local joint venture with Siemens AG. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu on April 1. As the PC business is important to the Fujitsu Group, Fujitsu has every intention to maintain the PC business as a core part of our European products portfolio after April 1. There are currently no plans to exit the PC business, reduce the workforce of Fujitsu Siemens Computers, or to close its plants. In preparation for the integration of Fujitsu Siemens Computers into the Fujitsu Group, Fujitsu is considering realigning the PC product lineup in Europe by concentrating on higher-end models.

Fujitsu intros LifeBook A1120 with 15.6 inch HD display
February 25th -- Fujitsu on Wednesday announced the upcoming release of its LifeBook A1120 notebook PC which is due to replace the current LifeBook A1110. Like the predecessor, the new notebook has swappable lids that lets users customize the look of the computer, but the notebook has upgraded hardware that increases system performance. Processing power comes from a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, while RAM can be upgraded up to 4GB. Storage can be optioned up to 250GB on a 5,400RPM SATA hard drive.

Now think of a similar-looking device that's an entire computer. Marvell on Tuesday introduced a new kind of personal computer, called SheevaPlug, along with its Plug Computing initiative. SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Global computer server sales fell sharply in the fourth quarter, industry tracker IDC said on Wednesday, warning that the slowdown would worsen before any improvement is seen. Server unit shipments tumbled 12 percent in the quarter ending Dec. 31 as revenue dropped 14 percent to $13.5 billion. IDC said it was the steepest decline since the dot-com bust nearly seven yearago.

The companies on Wednesday unveiled a multi-year pact that will provide Sun (JAVA) with more distribution for its Solaris 10 platform (statement). HP will resell Solaris subscriptions. HP also noted that the Solaris distribution pact will be limited to its Proliant lineup and not its Integrity servers, which use HP’s flavor of Unix–HP-UX. In other words, HP is distributing Solaris, but isn’t giving it a massive endorsement.

24 February - When Google’s online email service crashed for several hours this morning, did any IT managers considering the benefits of cloud computing feel a shudder? For consumers, losing access to email for a few hours is at most an annoyance. But for a business that moves critical applications to the cloud, such an outage – especially when it is so out of its control – could have dramatic consequences. The problems at Google Mail have highlighted the challenge that cloud computing providers face in convincing corporate IT decision-makers that the emerging model for delivering IT across the web is mature enough for serious business use. Some companies, such as construction firm Taylor Woodrow and newspaper giant Guardian Media Group (GMG), have already switched away from Microsoft Office on local PCs to Google Apps. From Wikinews, February 25, 2009 -- According to official figures, Japan's exports dropped by 46% in January compared to a year ago, the lowest statistics ever to be recorded. Japan's exports to the United States plunged by almost 53% in January, with car shipments down by 81%. Exports to the European Union fell by 47%. The Finance Ministry stated that the trade deficit was 952.6 billion yen (US$9.9 billion), the largest deficit ever recorded. The country's trade deficit with China increased by 61% to 562.7 billion yen (US$5.86 billion).

(2/26/2009) -- Total market slows, Unix advances and Blade sales hold up dominated by x86. Blade sales were among the bright spots in the IDC global server sales tracker for Q4 08 as users seek to take advantage of lower running costs. The blade server market showed strong shipment and revenue growth. Although the blade market experienced positive growth in the quarter, the segment decelerated sharply, with factory revenue increasing 16.1% year over year on shipment growth of 12.1% compared to 4Q07. Overall, bladed servers, including x86, EPIC, and RISC blades, accounted for $1.4 billion in the fourth quarter, representing 10.4% of total quarterly server market revenue. More than 85% of all blade revenue is driven by x86 systems where blades now represent 18.5% of all x86 server revenue.

Reuters, EE Times Europe, 02/24/2009 - TOKYO, Feb 24 -- Japan's Fujitsu Ltd may cut product lines, reorganise factories and slash jobs to turn around its overseas PC business after buying out its joint venture with Siemens, a senior executive said on Tuesday. Tatsuo Tomita, a senior executive vice president at Fujitsu, also said the company has no immediate plans to sell the loss-making consumer PC business of Fujitsu Siemens Computers after the buyout as reported by media. "We don't believe things should be as they are, and we know we have to do something," he told Reuters in an interview. "We are reviewing current operations to see why it (Fujitsu Siemens Computers' PC business) is unprofitable even though it sells more PCs than we do." Fujitsu is to buy Siemens AG's 50 percent stake in their PC joint venture in April, aiming to better compete with IBM and Hewlett-Packard, which dwarf it in computer markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

23 February - The ‘greening’ of IT began in the data centre, with a focus on server consolidation and cooling, but is now spreading to all levels of the IT infrastructure. February 24, 2009 -- When Microsoft initially made code for its Windows 7 beta available, it looked great. On both fresh hardware and on first-look upgrades from Windows Vista machines, Windows 7 met the world looking like a champ. Its interface is cleaner, Microsoft has taken a lot of the annoyance out of its User Account Control (UAC), clean installations on newer hardware are very, very smooth. Tested on desktops, notebooks - - even some netbooks - - the word came back: This is what Vista should have been all along. Upon closer look, though, it appears as though Windows 7 could actually be more of a challenge for businesses than Vista ever was. The upgrade path from Windows XP - - which is still the predominant desktop OS in businesses - - can be described graciously as "ugly." In attempts at simulated enterprise upgrade testing, as well as in real-world testing on single systems with existing-but-not-brand-new PCs, a series of important-to-know problems are beg! inning to emerge...We've almost lost count of the number of blue screens we've seen in the CRN Test Center during the Windows 7 evaluation process. In some cases, PCs we've used just won't upgrade at all to Windows 7. In others, important functions have to be disabled or eliminated to get it to install as an upgrade. To upgrade to Windows 7 on a Fujitsu Lifebook S series notebook, we had to uninstall the media reader and other drivers.

23 February - The ‘greening’ of IT began in the data centre, with a focus on server consolidation and cooling, but is now spreading to all levels of the IT infrastructure. With IT responsible for as much carbon emissions as the aviation industry, according to Gartner, more energy efficient or ‘green’ IT has risen up the corporate agenda. In a survey conducted in September of last year, 72% of IT managers said they had plans to implement green technology initiatives to reduce carbon emissions over the next few years. And, of the 100 UK IT managers polled, the majority said they were planning hardware-based projects in the near future that focused on virtualisation to consolidate servers and so, save energy in data centres.

The $278 million Orbiting Carbon Observatory blasted off aboard an unmanned Taurus rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 4:55 a.m. EST (0955 GMT), headed for an orbital perch about 400 miles above the poles.

- Microsoft, With Windows 7 Upgrade, May Be In a Bad Fix
February 24, 2009 -- When Microsoft initially made code for its Windows 7 beta available, it looked great. On both fresh hardware and on first-look upgrades from Windows Vista machines, Windows 7 met the world looking like a champ. Its interface is cleaner, Microsoft has taken a lot of the annoyance out of its User Account Control (UAC), clean installations on newer hardware are very, very smooth. Tested on desktops, notebooks - - even some netbooks - - the word came back: This is what Vista should have been all along. Upon closer look, though, it appears as though Windows 7 could actually be more of a challenge for businesses than Vista ever was. The upgrade path from Windows XP - - which is still the predominant desktop OS in businesses - - can be described graciously as "ugly." In attempts at simulated enterprise upgrade testing, as well as in real-world testing on single systems with existing-but-not-brand-new PCs, a series of important-to-know problems are beg! inning to emerge...We've almost lost count of the number of blue screens we've seen in the CRN Test Center during the Windows 7 evaluation process. In some cases, PCs we've used just won't upgrade at all to Windows 7. In others, important functions have to be disabled or eliminated to get it to install as an upgrade. To upgrade to Windows 7 on a Fujitsu Lifebook S series notebook, we had to uninstall the media reader and other drivers.
