Review: Fujitsu LifeBook U820

Introduction: Intel has a lot of work to do with the Atom processor before it is ready to power next-gen mobile devices. Crippled for speed, it has very little useful application for anyone who uses a computer for anything more than simple e-mail, Web, media, and time management. Of course, if that describes your needs on the next flight to Tahiti, or if you find most laptops to be overkill when you just need to study at the library, Atom – and the brand-new Atom powered LifeBook U820 Mini-Notebook from Fujitsu – might be just right.

Old Moon Images Get Modern Makeover

April 01, 2009 - WOODLANDS, Texas -- Think of it as a space age twist to that adage: Something old, something new...something borrowed, something blue. Back in 1966 and 1967, NASA hurled a series of Lunar Orbiter spacecraft to the moon. Each of the five orbiters were dispatched to map the landscape in high-resolution and assist in charting where best to set down Apollo moonwalkers and open up the lunar surface to expanded human operations. Imagery gleaned from the Lunar Orbiters over 40 years ago is now getting a 21st century makeover thanks to the Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project (LOIRP).

Confidence at Japanese companies at all-time low

By TOMOKO A. HOSAKA - Associated Press - Apr. 01, 2009, TOKYO -- The latest probe of Japan's ailing economy points toward a new diagnosis: split personality disorder. Pummeled by an unprecedented slump in global demand, confidence at major Japanese manufacturers has fallen to an all-time low, a key central bank survey showed Wednesday. But the worst may be over for big exporters who plan to boost output this spring amid slimmer stockpiles and nascent expectations for a recovery in overseas economies. Meanwhile, the outlook is bleaker than ever for workers, households and non-manufacturers - all casualties of the ongoing cutbacks by Japan's global giants like Toyota and Sony.

Top 10 April Fool's Day Fake News Items

Ian Paul, PC World - Apr 1, 2009 -- Every year, the first of April is a time for an incredibly amount of creativity online. And today, April Fool's Day, will not disappoint. I woke up this morning to find an amazing array of head-scratching technological advancements (PC World has the scoop on a Tivo feature). Some I imagine would actually be fun to use, others I'm not so sure. For example, I am not sure how wise it is to switch your Gmail to Autopilot or for Qualcomm to fill the skies with Wolfpigeons. It also seems a little strange to use facial gestures in the latest version of the Opera browser, and for The Guardian to forgo the printed page for an all-Twitter format.

CSM: Today’s top 5 April Fools gags

By Chris Gaylord | 04.01.09 -- April 1 is always a big day for Web companies. Every year, Google, Digg, and the rest of the Web 2.0 elite exercise their funny bone and craft some amazing spoofs. Here are our five favorites for 2009.
The Guardian ditches print, switches to Twitter: A week after the Monitor moved its daily publication to online-only, Britain’s Guardian announced it, too, would turn its back on paper. Its new format: Twitter. In this fast-paced world, what better way to get your news than in 140-character chunks? This new-media strategy extends to their archives as well. For example:

1927: OMG first successful transatlantic air flight wow, pretty cool! Boring day otherwise *sigh*

1940: W Churchill giving speech NOW - “we shall fight on the beaches … we shall never surrender” check YouTube later for the rest

The History Of April Fools' Day Plus The Top Five Pranks Of All Time (VIDEO) (PICS)

Huffington Post | Alex Leo | March 30, 2009 -- The origins of April Fools' Day are murky, but the likeliest explanation is that it began as a way to mock French people who were slow to switch to the Gregorian Calendar which changed New Year's from April 1 to January 1. These folks were labeled "fools" and some were sent on "fools' errands." Of course there are alternate theories, specifically ones that ascribe the informal holiday to the cultural impact of the Hilaria Festival of ancient Rome, held on March 25, and the Holi celebration in India, which ends on March 31. The Museum of Hoaxes has a complete collection of all the theories, but the real problem with explaining April Fools' Day is that you never quite know when someone is trying to fool you with their explanation. The classic example of this comes from Joseph Boskin: Constantine and Kugel. This Boston University professor explained that the holiday stemmed from a moment of political unrest under Constantine, when a group of court jesters said they could run the empire better than he could. He claimed that Constantine was amused so he let a jester named Kugel be king for a day...April 1. The "AP" ran this theory in 1983, only to find out it was Boskin's prank on the American public.

CDFA Employs Felines in Fight Against LBAM

'Apocalypse Meow' expected to knock out pest within months

Apr 1, 2009, by Curtis Cartier -- In what it hopes will be the checkmate move in its long fight against the invasive light brown apple moth, the California Department of Agriculture is unleashing one of the insect's oldest natural predators: kittens. Beginning in May, the CDFA, in partnership with the Department of Fish and Game and the National Guard, will begin importing the first of more than 5 million felix domesticus juveniles, which it is hoped will eliminate the voracious pest through endless batting of the insects. Though kittens typically only kill about 10 percent of the moths and butterflies they chase, scientists believe that consistent annoyance by the cats will keep the bugs occupied and unable to mate.

Massive Water Discovery Ends California Drought

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - April 1, 2009 - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) today lifted the state's year-long drought emergency order on the news that an enormous water reservoir has been discovered along California's western border. Although the exact size of the aquifer has yet to be determined, reports indicate it may be hundreds of miles across and more than 10,000 feet deep, billions of gallons in total. "We are delighted to say, the drought is over," Schwarzenegger proclaimed at a beachfront press conference, a gleaming drinking glass on his podium. "This discovery will provide enough water for every man, woman, child, farmer, rancher, business, school and park in our great state to live the California lifestyle without ever again worrying whether there is enough water to waste."

Storage in the new Fujitsu Technology Services By Chris Mellor, 30th March 2009 -- Tomorrow Fujitsu Siemens Computers will become Fujitsu Technology Services, as Fujitsu completes its buyout of Siemens' 50 per cent share of FSC. FTS becomes Fujitsu's global storage competence centre. FTS is responsible for selling and supporting Fujitsu IT products and services in Europe, the Middle East and India, and Africa; it's Fujitsu EMEA in other words. It has around 10,000 employees, with 1,000 in research and development. One reason to have FTS as a separate entity is to let Fujitsu think global and act locally, in the words of Fujitsu president Kuniaki Nozoe. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/30/fts_storage_role/

Fujitsu hopes to almost double server sales in two years

By Martyn Williams , IDG News Service , 03/30/2009 -- The company will target the Intel-based server market and merge global product units to achieve the goal. Fujitsu is aiming to almost double sales of servers in the next two years as it absorbs Fujitsu Siemens Computers and reorganizes many aspects of its servers business into a single, global organization. The company is aiming to sell 500,000 servers in its 2010 fiscal year, which ends in March 2011. That's almost double the 270,000 servers it sold in the financial year just ending, it said Monday. "We have finally been able to have a full line-up of products that will make us more of a global company," said Kuniaki Nozoe, president of Fujitsu at a Tokyo news conference. Nozoe, who has led Fujitsu for nine months, said the target won't be an easy one to reach but set it as a clear target for the server business to achieve.

NEC retreats while Fujitsu plots expansion

- Japanese vendors harbour contrasting ambitions for global PC and server market -
CRN by Doug Woodburn - 30 Mar 2009 -- NEC has revealed it is winding down all PC market activity outside its native Japan - just as compatriot Fujitsu unveiled bullish plans to grow its global server business. After recently announcing it will cease PC production in EMEA, NEC has confirmed plans to exit the Asia-Pac PC market this summer, Reuters reported. The retreat is part of its NEC’s strategy to dump under-performing business units and cut more than 20,000 jobs as it faces up to anticipated losses of 290m yen for its current fiscal year. But just as NEC retrenches, fellow Japanese vendor Fujitsu is plotting an assault on the global server market in a bid to double its market share.

Could the Internet run out of space?

March 28, 2009 By Peter Walker - LONDON, England (CNN) -- When a small group of university scientists began linking computers on different campus sites at the very end of the 1960s, they had no idea that their work would one day spiral into a globally-accessible network in which the total number of pages is measured in the tens of billions. Such has been the Internet's phenomenal and dizzying growth that much of the technology which supports it has grown organically and without much forward planning.

FT.com: The genius behind Google’s web browser

By Rob Minto: March 27 2009 - About five miles outside Aarhus in Denmark – the country’s second-biggest city and the unofficial capital of Jutland – sits a converted farmhouse. Inside, in a large wood-floored space with vaulted ceilings – once part of the stables – a big brown leather sofa is positioned a few feet from a DVD player. From the outside, with its rough cobbles and small, recessed windows, the farmhouse still seems steeped in the past; yet this is the place where a key part of the future of the internet first took shape.

Fujitsu Lifebook N7010 review

Are two screens better than one for the Fujitsu Lifebook N7010 laptop?

One screen wasn't enough for Fujitsu. The company just had to tack on a second, smaller screen and create a sort of odd mashup with its Fujitsu Lifebook N7010 laptop. The main screen is a fairly crisp 16in, 16:9 aspect-ratio screen (new for the LifeBook maker). The other panel is a 4in touchscreen that serves as a shortcut-heavy zone. Interesting, yes - but does that tiny secondary screen make the Fujitsu Lifebook N7010 worth the US $1,500 asking price (we don't yet have UK pricing)?

Japan stimulus plan may breach ¥10 trillion

23 March 2009 -- Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso’s next stimulus package may need to exceed ¥10 trillion ($104 billion) to bolster an economy heading for its worst recession since World War II, analysts said. Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano said yesterday that a new package of as much as ¥20 trillion is “not out of line” after the economy contracted at the fastest pace in more than 30 years last quarter.

FHB Boost is Australia’s “Sub-prime Lite”

Steve Keen | Mar 23, 2009 -- The First Home Owners Boost (as it is officially known) has certainly given the Government bang for its buck. By spending roughly $200 million of its own money to date, it has added about $3 billion to the housing market. But the additional $2.8 billion has come from increased mortgage debt taken on by those most vulnerable to a serious economic downturn, at a time when the latest “unexpected” increase in unemployment indicates that, like it or not, the global downturn is coming our way.

Finally Time for an E-Book?

March 23, 2009 --Implications: Why buy an e-reader when I can use my Palm Treo for reading e-books. Sure it has a small screen but I already have it. It is convenient and portable. Previous e-readers were good for reading text but paperbacks were easy to carry around, and a lot cheaper. With a color display, the e-reader value proposition increases. It may now succeed because many the books that rely on color for illustrative content are now available.

Rivals say IBM stifles competition to mainframes

By Ashlee Vance - The New York Times - March 23, 2009 -- IBM has dominated the mainframe computer business since the category was created four decades ago. And it still gets about one-quarter of its $100 billion in annual revenue from sales, software, services, and financing related to the machines. So when an upstart, Platform Solutions in Sunnyvale, Calif., developed software that turned standard servers into systems that mimicked IBM's expensive mainframes, Big Blue fought back. After legal action failed to fend off the pipsqueak, IBM resorted to a bear hug: it bought Platform in July for $150 million. And then it promptly terminated the innovative product.

Japanese computer parts makers to lay off 3,750 workers in Philippines, reports say

March 19, 2009 -- Two Japanese computer parts makers will lay off 3,750 of their factory workers in the Philippines because of weakening demand, media reports and officials said Thursday. MANILA, Philippines -- Two Japanese computer parts makers will lay off 3,750 of their factory workers in the Philippines because of weakening demand, media reports and officials said Thursday. Fujitsu Computer Products Philippines, which manufactures hard disks, has informed the Philippine Export Zone Authority it will dismiss 1,750 workers in coming months, according to Elmer San Pascual, a spokesman for the authority, which oversees industrial parks around the country. The factory employed 5,000 as of December. Local media quoted Philippine Labor Secretary Marianito Roque as saying TDK Fujitsu Philippines Corp. will lay off 2,000 workers from a factory that makes magnetic heads for computers. Roque did not return phone calls.

BY PAUL VECCHIATTO , ITWEB CAPE-- [ Cape Town | ITWeb, 20 March 2009 ] - Local company Computer Storage Services (CSS) has developed a non-invasive method of recovering data from failed Seagate hard drives, particularly the wonky Barracuda 7200.11 range that has a high failure rate. International media reports since January have cited numerous examples of the Seagate products locking down without any ability to recover data. Seagate has issued a firmware update, but if the drives have failed already, then it is impossible to install it. The international hard drive manufacturer has said it will not issue a general recall of the product because the failure rate is below its threshold to do so. A major problem with the hard drive failures is that once the disk is inoperative, it is all but impossible to either load the firmware and continue normal operations, or recover data that organisations need. This means Seagate's firmware upgrade has to be installed before the hard drive fails, which for many is too little and far too late. The solution: CSS MD James Grcic says his company has developed a method that is non-invasive, meaning the drive does not have to be physically opened, allows it to start up again, gets the firmware loaded and then recovers the data. The solution, which was developed with the help of a former Fujitsu engineer from the Philippines, requires an electrical pulse to be sent to the hard drives chipset, at a specific frequency, at a specific time during the start up phase. This unlocks the drive to allow the firmware update to be loaded and then the data is recovered.

Silicon Valley Churn: Reinventing the datacenter, Cisco-style

March 19, 2009 -- In a week when Cisco, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Intel and AMD were all featured prominently in the news cycle, I got the feeling that the whole industry might be on the cusp of a realignment. On Monday, Cisco formally announced its intentions to become a major player in the systems and services market. In a webinar telecast that delivered more industry buzzwords per minute than I've heard in years, Cisco managed to bring all the hot trends in IT -- virtualization, cloud computing, unified fabrics, multicore, open source, and so on -- under its new Unified Computing System (UCS) architecture. In a nutshell, UCS will be implemented as Cisco-branded blade servers with embedded management software that virtualizes compute and storage systems. The company is promoting UCS as a way for datacenters to consolidate infrastructure under a single hardware/software platform -- a sort of proto-cloud, if you will.

Programmer replaces missing finger with thumb drive

Arjun Ramachandran - March 18, 2009 -- A computer programmer who lost half his finger after his motorbike crashed into a deer has had the finger replaced with a USB drive. Jerry Jalava, from Finland, says the two-gigabyte prosthetic finger is not permanently attached to his hand, allowing him to leave his finger in the computer slot and "pick it up after I'm ready". The silicon prosthetic looks like a normal finger, but can be peeled back at the tip to reveal the USB drive. Mr Jalava uses the drive as storage for "photos, movies and other useful files", The Telegraph said. "When Jerry told doctors what he did for a living they joked he should have a USB 'finger drive' but that was good enough for him, and he set about making one," the paper said.
