WiMax from Sacred Wind blanketing Navajo lands

Mar 17, 2009 3:25 PM, By Kevin Fitchard--Using WiMax, Sacred Wind tackles the seemingly impossible of task of both voice and broadband to the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. In the vast tracts of land making up the Navajo reservation in northwestern New Mexico, there are thousands of homes that redefine the notion of underserved. They’re not just without broadband; they’re without dial tones. Some 6000 homes are off-grid, and local telecom provider Sacred Wind Communications has given up trying to connect them with copper phone lines. Instead it’s looking to WiMax.

DoCoMo pushes 120 Mbps using LTE

March 17, 2009 — 2:32pm ET | By Lynnette Luna -- Japan's NTT DoCoMo said its successful field tests of LTE resulted in data transmissions in the range of 120 Mbps in an urban environment. The operator used equipment from Fujitsu, deploying a 4 X 4 MIMO-based LTE network in a special testing location within the northern Japanese city of Sapporo in Hokkaio using 10 megahertz of spectrum. DoCoMo and Fujitsu Laboratories jointly developed LTE prototypes. By reaching 120 Mbps in a 10-megahertz swath of spectrum, DoCoMo reasons then that it could achieve 240 Mbps throughput using the 20 megahertz maximum bandwidth LTE allows. DoCoMo chose Fujitsu in 2006 to develop and manufacture LTE base stations for the operator.
