March 06, 2009 by Zara Baxter -- A couple of nifty gimmicks and an extended warranty help give this netbook the boost that its ergonomics don't. We're so used to seeing netbooks in the PC Authority offices, after having seen twenty or so arrive on our desks over the last year, that we watch each new netbook keenly for standout features that will lift it above the pack. There's plenty of possibilities to go round, from outstanding screen resolution or quality, to graphics addition, to feature-packed goodies and ergonomics.

- CIO: Fujitsu Siemens releases free ebook on storage [toc...]

06.03.2009 -- A new electronic book – containing everything you ever wanted to know about storage, but were afraid to ask – has been made available online by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Do you know your SAN from your NAS? How does iSCSI compare to FC? How close is your near-line storage and what does a VTA do? The answers to all these storage-related questions, and more, can be found in a new book published by Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC), entitled Storage Basics. Getting to grips with the ever-growing flood of data is still the greatest challenge faced by most organisations with regard to information storage.

- Fujitsu Goes With ARM Cortex For Automotive Apps [toc...]

05 March 2009 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe GmbH has signed a major licensing agreement for the ARM Cortex-R4F processor to use in automotive applications including safety and chassis. In addition to the Cortex-R4F processor, the agreement includes the ARM AMBA Designer tool and ARM CoreSight technology for advanced on-chip debug and real-time trace. The agreement is a significant endorsement of the ARM architecture in the automotive market as manufacturers endeavour to consolidate their automotive functions into a reduced number of more capable processors.

- BBC.co.uk: Satyam approved to sell 51% stake [toc...]

6 March - Fraud-hit IT firm Satyam has been given the go-ahead to sell most of itself. Indian financial authorities approved plans for the company to sell a 51% stake as it seeks to win back clients and restore customer confidence. Reports suggest computing giant IBM and Indian engineering firm Larsen & Toubro are frontrunners for the stake. Satyam has struggled since former boss Ramalinga Raju admitting inflating their assets by more than $1bn. Shares in Satyam jumped 18% after the company's state-appointed board got approval to sell the majority holding. Satyam lost more than 80% of its market value following Mr Raju's confession in January. The auction for the stake will be global and potential buyers would need to have assets of at least $150m. The buyer then would not be able to sell its stake for at least three years, Satyam said in a statement. Satyam had been one the biggest players in the booming Indian IT software market, supplying back-office services t! o firms from around the world.

- Is Facebook trying to crush Twitter? [toc...]

05.03.2009 -- If you can't buy 'em, then beat 'em at their own game instead. Social-networking site Facebook has introduced real-time status streams that could explode the micro-blogging phenomenon started by Twitter into the mainstream. The service Twitter offers, which allows users to post updates of around 140 words long, has grown to become the world's third-largest social-networking site after Facebook and MySpace, with six million registered users and 55 million monthly visitors.

- Green tinge: CeBIT goes eco-friendly [toc...]

06/03/2009 11:21:00 - by Leila Makki -- At Mobile World Congress a slew of new handsets were revealed, all promising to be more eco-friendly. So, its no wonder that at the next industry event, CeBIT in Germany, the theme was also green technology. At the largest wireless trade event, the GSMA introduced a new initiative to standardise a 'universal' charger so that the majority of new phones will use a 'one-size-fits-all' energy-efficient charger by 2012. The benefits from adopting this standard include improving energy efficiency when charging, halving standby power consumption and cutting back on the overall number of chargers being manufactured.

- Making solar cheaper than coal [toc...]

March 6, 2009 By Martin LaMonica, CNET News -- The day after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Emmanuel Sachs decided that it was time to get back into the solar-energy business. Starting in the 1970s, the Masssachussetts Institute of Technology mechanical-engineering professor had made significant contributions to solar, including a cell-making technique now used by Evergreen Solar. But once research funding for solar photovoltaics--converting sunlight into electricity--dried up in the 1980s, Sachs diverted into other fields, including 3D printing to help designers quickly build prototypes.

- UPDATE 2-Australia PM says wants local banks to cut fees [toc...]

* Australian government calls on banks to reduce fees
* Australian banks to draw $3.36 bln household fees in 2009
* High bank fees partly due to lower competition - survey (Adds banking association, ANZ comment, BOQ, details)
SYDNEY, March 6 - The Australian government is lobbying local banks to cut fees, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Friday, after a report found they were charging some of the rich world's highest banking costs at a time of economic crisis. Rudd, whose government has guaranteed the deposits and wholesale funding of Australia's banks, said he and the Treasurer, Wayne Swan, had recently expressed their concern in talks with local bank executives about high fees and charges. "Absolutely. The Treasurer and I have met again with the banks in recent weeks and we have raised expressly the question of bank fees and charges," Rudd said in a radio interview. "We will continue on this because everyone out there... is facing a really tough time and we don't want to see anyone adding to this burden by unnecessary charges," he added. The report, released by Fujitsu Consulting on Thursday, said Australian households paid about 22 percent more in bank fees than households in Britain and 1! 1 percent more than American households, partly because of weakening bank competition.

- Flat-TV, Digital Camera Ops Losing Money, But PCs Faring Well [toc...]

March 06, 2009 - TOKYO (Nikkei)--Although prices have fallen nearly 20% across the board in a year, electronics manufacturers are turning profits with personal computers, but not flat-panel televisions and digital cameras, because they have lowered costs in PC operations through such means as offshoring. The three major players in flat TVs -- Sony Corp. (6758), Panasonic Corp. (6752) and Sharp Corp. (6753) -- are expected to log operating losses this fiscal year in that business. Although global sales volume is forecast to grow 20-40%, the sharp drop in sales since last autumn has caused inventories to pile up. The firms have been forced to slash prices in order get rid of stockpiles, with prices down 18.4% from the peak in 2008. (* Subscription Required *)
