- Regarding Media Reports on European PC Business

Tokyo, February 26, 2009 — There have been reports in the media regarding the future of Fujitsu's PC business in Europe. Fujitsu sells PCs in Europe through Fujitsu Siemens Computers, our local joint venture with Siemens AG. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu on April 1. As the PC business is important to the Fujitsu Group, Fujitsu has every intention to maintain the PC business as a core part of our European products portfolio after April 1. There are currently no plans to exit the PC business, reduce the workforce of Fujitsu Siemens Computers, or to close its plants. In preparation for the integration of Fujitsu Siemens Computers into the Fujitsu Group, Fujitsu is considering realigning the PC product lineup in Europe by concentrating on higher-end models.

- Processor.com: Tips For Taming Cabinet Chaos (*Quotes Fujitsu SVP of Mktg. R. McCormack)

by Christian Perry -- Server Cabinet Organization Is Essential For An Efficient Data Center - IF YOUR SERVER CABINETS make a dense Peruvian jungle look neat and tidy, you’re not alone. Mired within the constant loop of adding and removing components, many data centers eventually grow careless with cabinet organization, in turn creating environments that are frightfully unfavorablefor their equipment. If this situation describes your data center, these tips can get you back on track.
Know How To Stack Your Rack
Although it’s possible to neatly organize server cabinets regardless of what goes in them, there exists a precise science to how the equipment should be situated in the cabinet. According to Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu (www.computers.us.fujitsu.com), hot, heavy equipment such as UPSes, power supplies, and powerful and heavy servers should be placed on the bottom of cabinets.

- Best Return On Investment: Treat Cables With Care (R. McCormack, Fujitsu)

By their very nature, cables are prone to suffering punctures and other damage that can not only ruin the cables themselves, but also negatively impact the servers and other components to which they’re connected. But that damage can be avoided. “Avoid dressing cabling tightly over sharp edges of railings or panels,” advises Richard McCormack, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu (www.computers.us.fujitsu.com). “Take care not to pinch cables between components and avoid bending them as much as possible. Cables should never be bent tight enough to cause a crease in their sheaths. Fiber cables must not violate their minimum bend radius. When securing cables inside the rack with cable ties or the new, less-abrasive Velcro-based alternatives, we recommend dressing the bundles in such a way as to avoid interference with installed components or rack-side panels or rails.”

Feb. 25, 2009 By YURI KAGEYAMA, The Associated Press -- New tack means fewer hours, less pay, but U.S.-style mass layoffs are avoided - HIRAKATA, Osaka Pref. — Yasuo Igarashi spends a lot of time these days on the jungle gym with his daughter, after his employer joined the growing ranks of companies adopting work-sharing to ride out the global slump. Common in parts of Europe, work-sharing means slashing employees' pay and hours instead of firing people outright. Two or three people might share what previously was one person's job.

- 15 online photo editors compared

February 25, 2009 by Josh Lowensohn -- Tools that let you edit photos in the Web browser have come a long way in the last few years. We wanted to take a moment to do a feature comparison with a grouping of editors--big and small, to see what each one is capable of. Most of the services on this list take advantage of Adobe's ever-developing Flash platform, which in its latest iteration got a huge boost with support for the large images coming out of today's high-megapixel cameras. On the flip side of that, several of the non-Flash-based editors use AJAX to make the changes happen without reloading the page. The benefit here is that you can run these on machines without the latest versions of Flash installed.

- Japan's tech giants scramble to refocus, reorganise

26 Feb 2009 -- A new economic landscape is emerging in Japan, drastically altering and reducing the role played by the country's leading companies—the network of banks, financial institutions, manufacturers and high-tech businesses, also known as Keiretsu—that drove its post-war expansion. Just a few years after emerging from a decade-long slump, Japan's economy is again weakening and its electronics giants are hurrying the necessary reorganisation operations to reposition themselves for growth in a worsening global market.

- New Collaboration Aims to Accelerate Direct-Write E-Beam Adoption

Aaron Hand, Executive Editor, Electronic Media -- Semiconductor International, 2/25/2009 -- Some 20 companies throughout the semiconductor supply chain have created the eBeam Initiative to further work in maskless e-beam lithography, particularly techniques that could speed up the process and increase its value to the industry. In a dyslexic take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Aki Fujimura, CEO of D2S Inc. (Yokohama, Japan), posed the question, “To eb or not to eb?” Although perhaps not in quite the same way, many people throughout the semiconductor industry are beginning to ask more questions about whether e-beam lithography may hold some keys to renewing design innovation and to helping small-lot chipmakers survive.

- Computing: What if Google Mail had been your corporate IT system?

24 February - When Google’s online email service crashed for several hours this morning, did any IT managers considering the benefits of cloud computing feel a shudder? For consumers, losing access to email for a few hours is at most an annoyance. But for a business that moves critical applications to the cloud, such an outage – especially when it is so out of its control – could have dramatic consequences. The problems at Google Mail have highlighted the challenge that cloud computing providers face in convincing corporate IT decision-makers that the emerging model for delivering IT across the web is mature enough for serious business use. Some companies, such as construction firm Taylor Woodrow and newspaper giant Guardian Media Group (GMG), have already switched away from Microsoft Office on local PCs to Google Apps. GMG plans to go even further – ditching Lotus Notes for Google Mail later this year after completing the move of 2,400 users to the online wo! rd processing and calendars function.

- Server sales contract but blades and Unix hold up in the data center

(2/26/2009) -- Total market slows, Unix advances and Blade sales hold up dominated by x86. Blade sales were among the bright spots in the IDC global server sales tracker for Q4 08 as users seek to take advantage of lower running costs. The blade server market showed strong shipment and revenue growth. Although the blade market experienced positive growth in the quarter, the segment decelerated sharply, with factory revenue increasing 16.1% year over year on shipment growth of 12.1% compared to 4Q07. Overall, bladed servers, including x86, EPIC, and RISC blades, accounted for $1.4 billion in the fourth quarter, representing 10.4% of total quarterly server market revenue. More than 85% of all blade revenue is driven by x86 systems where blades now represent 18.5% of all x86 server revenue.
