Fujitsu Adds 5-Wire Resistive Touch Panels

New design improves linearity; increases active touch input area

Sunnyvale, CA, May 27, 2009 — Fujitsu Components America Inc. today announced it is adding a new line of RoHS-compliant, 5-wire Resistive Touch Panels to its product offering. The panels feature a design construction that improves linearity and allows OEMs to maximize the active touch input area especially in large-size and wide-aspect ratio displays. The Film-Glass touch panels use a proprietary detection method (patent pending) that enables narrow frame borders in large touch panels (e.g.: 9mm for 15-inch size) with an edge-area linearity performance of +/- 2 percent. This allows more of the active display area to be used for touch input functionality. Target applications include POS systems and kiosks for the retail, restaurant and hospitality markets.

UPDATE 1-Fujitsu to use own cash to retire debt - Nikkei

May 29 (Reuters) - Japan's Fujitsu Ltd will use cash on hand to retire 300 billion yen ($3.11 billion) in bonds this fiscal year, a move that will help lower its debt-equity ratio to below 1, the Nikkei business daily reported without citing sources. On Wednesday, the electronics maker retired 250 billion yen in equity warrants and in June 50 billion yen in bonds will mature. Instead of rolling over the bonds, Fujitsu plans to pay them off and cut interest-bearing debt, which totaled 883.4 billion yen on March 31, the paper said.

Over the past few years, I’ve been traveling around the country showing ScanSnap at trade shows, technology fairs, user groups, and sometimes even on the plane to and from these different events, and every once in awhile I get this question. I actually wonder why I don’t get it more often given the proliferation of Multi-Function Printers. The short answer to your question is no, but let me give you some background as to why Fujitsu hasn’t gone the MFP route.

Report: Server sales declined 24.5 percent in first quarter

By Brandon Bailey - Mercury News: 05/27/2009 -- The server computer industry took a huge hit in the first three months of 2009, when sales plunged nearly 25 percent and total revenue fell below $10 billion for the first time in more than a decade, according to a new report from a leading market research firm. The global recession hurt all the major server vendors — including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Dell, Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu — as corporate and government customers put off buying new models of the workhorse computers that are used to power Web sites, data centers and a variety of business functions. "This was a decline across the board. It shows the deep impact of the economic do
Linkwnturn," said Jean Bozman, an analyst with the IDC research firm, which released the report Wednesday.

IBM tops as HP slips after EDS buy

Fran Foo | May 26, 2009 -- HEWLETT-PACKARD'S hope of morphing itself into a formidable rival to IBM has yet to materialise, with figures from research outfit Gartner showing its acquisition of EDS has had lacklustre impact. According to Gartner research on the IT professional services market in Australia, HP,
including EDS, went backwards by 1.8 per cent in terms of growth rates post merger (see table below). Increasing its market share in these types of services was the main reason for HP's $US13.9billion acquisition of EDS last May. According to Gartner, HP registered $1.29 billion in revenue, representing a
7.6 per cent market share last year. In the previous year it recorded $1.32 billion in revenue with an 8.2 per cent share.

Report: Rivals can exploit Kindle shortcomings

June 1, 2009 by Lance Whitney -- Companies are likely to challenge the Amazon Kindle by unveiling cheaper, more versatile e-readers, moving beyond books, and striking better deals with publishers, according to a report released Monday by Forrester Research. "Amazon.com, leveraging its position as a dominant book retailer, has catalyzed the market for eBooks, but that's just the beginning of the eReader revolution," writes Forrester media and technology analyst Sarah Rotman Epps in the report. "Competitors will attack Amazon's market position by launching new features, expanding content beyond books, dominating markets outside the U.S., reducing costs, and improving relationships with publishers."

New software, services help you manage passwords, protect online identity

By Brandon Bailey, Mercury News: 05/31/2009 -- Your dog's name. Random nouns. And who could forget
blm457yfp? Most people who use the Internet know the difficulty of remembering all the passwords they need to check e-mail, chat online, download music and transfer funds. Experts advise against using the same password for multiple accounts, in case it falls into the wrong hands. But all those different sign-ons are hard to keep straight and, even with password-manager software to help, they can be hard to keep secure.
