A more global Fujitsu adds a cube May 12, 2009 by Gordon Haff -- The "Dynamic Cube" is Fujitsu's first big server announcement since announcing sweeping changes to its corporate structure at the beginning of April. By way of background, Fujitsu has been morphing into an organization that's about being an integrated worldwide business--rather than a Japanese company that opportunistically also sells elsewhere--for roughly a year now. In the case of North America, this meant creating an organization called Fujitsu America that consolidated the application services of Fujitsu Consulting, the system platforms of Fujitsu Computer Systems, and the retailing solutions of Fujitsu Transaction Solutions.

Fujitsu denies more job cuts

Fran Foo | May 12, 2009 -- FUJITSU Australia has dismissed talk that more than 100
employees could be laid off as a result of Western Australia Police's decision to drop
the company as a major IT supplier. The Japanese IT services company has been a
project services and managed application services provider to WA Police for 10 years, hiring up to 126 people to work on the contracts, worth millions of dollars per annum. WA Police has since revamped its IT procurement and delivery model, creating a panel comprising CSC Australia and Ajilon for project services, with a potential value of up to $120 million in contracts. CSC's $50 million deal with WA Police for infrastructure support has gone to local outfit Kinetic IT, but the US firm bagged an SAP applications support contract valued at $15 million. Fujitsu said that
fewer than 20 people would be retrenched as a result of the contract losses.

Fujitsu Creates Intelligent USB Drive for Ultra-security

05/12/2009 -- Fujitsu has continued its innovation in security with the invention of a smart USB drives. Due to the ever increasing threat of data leakage through small
portable flash drives system administrators and policymakers are struggling with ways to stem these problems while maintaining their utility. For a brief stint, The Department
of Defense actually banished flash drives from their facilities. While devices like the IronKey and other hardware solutions have helped improve some of the aspects of flash drive security MANY holes remain. Fujitsu is developing a software and hardware
solution that will start to close the circle around USB flash storage devices and
enterprise security.

No unified networking with Fujitsu's bladed server - yet

By Chris Mellor, 12th May 2009 -- There is no unified networking with FTS's freshly-announced Dynamic Cube - yet. But FCoE is coming. Yesterday's announcement of the BX900 by Fujitsu Technology Solutions showed that it supported both Ethernet and Fibre Channel connections, with Brocade and Cisco Fibre Channel switches being certified. There was no support for the use of converged network adapters (CNAs), the enhanced NICs that carry out the processing of Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and thus converge Fibre Channel networking onto Ethernet.

Fujitsu's ballsy bid- Server aiming at 250% server growth

By Paul Taylor, 13 May 2009 -- FUJITSU'S ANNOUNCEMENT of its Blade Server BX900 yesterday didn't go unnoticed, but it's what's in the background that's really got analysts in a frenzy... and anything that stirs these guys up is good enough to print in our INQpinion. The staple of Japanese overseas business practice has long been based on moderately successful overseas bids which end up in limbo because some gaijin exec didn't tune in to the corporate culture. Results time usually translates to "let's see what we did wrong," followed by 'go red in the face, pack-up-and-head-home'. Amdahl and Fujitsu-Siemens are two companies which illustrate this model perfectly.

The Venus gives a Japanese firm the title of the world's fastest CPU maker for the first time since 1999, when Fujitsu last had the fastest CPU. The development means Fujitsu has overtaken some of the world's biggest information technology companies, including Intel Corp. and IBM Corp., in terms of CPU speed. The calculated speed of the new CPU is about 2.5-times faster than the previous record-holding model, which was made by Intel.

Sun’s Sparc still has future, Ellison insists

Posted by Brenon Daly on May 12, 2009 -- With Oracle likely just two months or so
away from closing its $7.4bn acquisition of Sun Microsystems, speculation is now picking up about what parts of Sun’s technology portfolio will be dropped. (And make no mistake, cost-cutting is a major driver of this deal. Oracle has pledged to wring at least $1.5bn of operating profit from Sun in the first year that it owns the company.) But Oracle is currently working hard to counter suggestions that it won’t take on Sun’s core hardware business, and in particular, that it will give up on Sparc processor development. That’s not the case, CEO Larry Ellison insists. In fact, Oracle will increase investment in Sparc, Ellison says.

‘Kill Switch’ Disables Stolen Laptops

May 12, 2009, By Stephen Williams -- A lost or stolen laptop or notebook computer is replaceable; the stolen data inside it may produce the real cause of an owner’s anxiety. Which makes Fujitsu’s newly announced “security chip” for PCs a most intriguing proposition. It’s sort of like LoJack for Laptops, but more sophisticated. The technology, developed with a
company called Willcom and scheduled to be rolled out in Japan in the fall, allows the
PC owner to remotely delete the contents of the computer’s hard drive, even if the
machine is not powered on.
