J.P.Morgan - Australian Mortgage Industry-Volume 9

This report is the result of a joint effort between Fujitsu Consulting and J.P. Morgan, focusing on developments in the Australian Mortgage Industry. In relation to the mortgage industry generally, the key findings are: There is an expectation that mortgage rates have further to fall – Since the last rise in the Official Cash Rate in February 2008, households became hesitant at locking in high funding costs at the ‘top of the cycle’, in expectation of future cuts in the Official Cash Rate. The proportion of new loans at fixed rates is now at record lows, largely reflecting borrowers’ anticipation of further reductions in the Official Cash Rate as the impact of the slowing economy becomes more apparent. Fujitsu gains 16 pct on strong f'cast, chip moves

TOKYO, May 1 (Reuters) -
Shares in Japan's Fujitsu Ltd (6702.T) jumped 16 percent on Friday after the electronics maker issued profit forecasts well above market expectations and its deal with Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW) helped brighten the outlook for its struggling chip operations. Its stock rose to 487 yen by midday, after earlier increasing by its daily limit to 500 yen, its highest in more than six months. Fujitsu, Japan's biggest computer server vendor and No.2 PC maker, on Thursday said it expected a 16 percent rise in operating profit for the year that began last month, supported by relatively solid earnings in its core services operations and smaller losses in its chip business.

Fujitsu on the charge in outsourcing

Mahesh Sharma | May 05, 2009 --
FUJITSU Australia expects to sign several deals in the next six months and add up to 100 staff as it charges towards becoming the country's third-biggest technology company. The Japanese outsourcer's growth will be driven by the $200million acquisition of Telstra's services arm Kaz, completed last week. The expansion follows the $48million acquisition of Supply Chain Consulting -- which has boosted its local SAP credentials -- and the recent Qantas computing services outsourcing contract win, valued at more than $200 million over five years. The activity is part of Fujitsu's bid to become the third-largest technology company in Australia, behind IBM and Hewlett-Packard, according to
local chief executive Rod Vawdrey.

IBM Pays Customers To Ditch Sun Servers

By Paul McDougall, InformationWeek, May 4, 2009 --
Big Blue is doubling a rewards program under which businesses can get thousands of dollars worth of software and services for free -- if they unplug their Sun boxes. Amid uncertainty over Sun Microsystems (NSDQ: JAVA)' future under Oracle (NSDQ: ORCL), IBM (NYSE: IBM) is upping the ante in a competitive campaign that aims to convince businesses to switch from Sun servers to Big Blue's hardware. As of last week, IBM doubled the monetary value of incentives offered under its so-called Power Rewards migration program. Under the new terms, IBM will offer customers $8,000 worth of software or services for every Sun Sparc processor ditched in favor of IBM Power servers. IBM previously offered $4,000 per processor for customers that made the switch.

Old Japanese maps on Google Earth unveil secrets

By Jay Alabaster, Associated Press - TOKYO — When Google Earth added historical maps of Japan to its online collection last year, the search giant didn't expect a backlash. The finely detailed woodblock prints have been around for centuries, they were already posted on another website, and a historical map of Tokyo put up in 2006 hadn't caused any problems. But Google failed to judge how its offering would be received, as it has often done in Japan. The company is now facing inquiries from the Justice Ministry and angry accusations of prejudice because its maps detailed the locations of former low-caste communities.

Looking for a Wi-Fi hot spot? Try 10,000 feet up

May 4, 2009 By Debra Alban (CNN) -- The days of being cut off from the Internet while you're on a plane are quickly disappearing. A number of domestic airlines have recently begun offering Wi-Fi Internet access aboard planes, and other airlines say they are working toward making it happen. "This is the year" for Wi-Fi on planes, said Jack Blumenstein, president and CEO of Aircell, whose Gogo® Inflight Internet service provides access on Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Virgin America flights, and will begin testing on United flights later this year. Gogo is installed on more than 190 commercial planes, and Blumenstein said he expected 1,200 aircraft to have Gogo capability by the end of 2009.

Newspapers Must Evolve or Die

BusinessWeek.com reader Gregg Mizuno says newspapers should go weekly or even biweekly to compete with breaking news on the Web

By Gregg Mizuno, May 4, 2009 -- As a California-based media hound, I read Olga Kharif's article, "The Online Experiments That Could Help Newspapers," with great interest as it concerned a new business model for newspapers being tested by The Bakersfield Californian. As I commented on her story, daily newspapers need to transition to weeklies or biweeklies. If newspaper companies put all of their in-depth stories into concentrated newspapers, people will be far more willing to buy them at higher prices than the currently watered-down Sunday editions and the six puny editions that run throughout the week. If newspapers are publishing stories that were already covered by cable and broadcast news or the Internet, they might as well use news aggregation services on their Web sites for things that do not require original reporting.
