washingtonpost.com > Fujitsu LifeBook T2020 Tablet PC

Lauren Barnard, PC World, May 7, 2009 -- Though Fujitsu's LifeBook T2020 tablet PC is underpowered, it's light and long-lived enough to get you through the workday. Like most tablet PCs, Fujitsu's LifeBook T2020 caters to business folk. This laptop may shy away from sex appeal in favor of getting the job done, but it's angling to be a useful, lightweight (3.6 pounds), compact (11.7 by 8.6 by 1.3 inches) package. While it doesn't deliver in speed, it sure is ready for the long haul. The LifeBook T2020 retains virtually all of the physical features of its predecessor, the sober, professional-looking LifeBook T2010. The only thing about the T2020 that screams "2009," however, is its flawless 12.1-inch screen. The 1280-by-800-pixel panel looks exceptional, with much brighter and more-vivid colors than a typical matte laptop screen produces. Graphics, photos, and text are all very sharp and well defined, and the screen maintains its visually appealing contrast and intensity indoors and out.

Written by Max V. de Leon, 06 May 2009 -- A NEW company is taking over the Calamba, Laguna facility of Fujitsu Computer Products Corp. of the Philippines, which earlier disclosed that it is laying off up to 1,750 employees this year. Elmer San Pascual, group manager of the promotions and public relations division of Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza), said this is a welcome development for Fujitsu employees who were in danger of losing their jobs. “We have news from the industry that there is one Japanese company that is interested in acquiring all the assets of Fujitsu Corp. in the Philippines, plus the one in Malaysia,” San Pascual told the BusinessMirror. He did not name the Japanese firm.

Netbooks saved European PC market, Gartner says

EE Times Europe - 05/06/2009 - MUNICH, Germany — In the first quarter of 2009, PC shipments in Europe were up a meager 0.7 percent, market researcher Gartner has reckoned. If it were not for the Netbooks — or mini notebooks, as Gartner calls them — the market would have seen negative growth figures. Under the influence of the crisis, corporate PC users widely refrained from buying. For this reason, the corporate market declined by a whoppy 20 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Consumers however were free-spending. Thus they continued the trend towards notebook computers that dominates the PC market already for several years. In particular demand were mini-notebooks, or netbooks how they are called widely.

Australia to get tax on electronic waste

A new tax will see e-waste recycled from kerbside collection points

Darren Pauli 06 May, 2009 – Australia is set to get its first e-tax in a bid to create a nation-wide electronic goods recycling scheme. The industry-backed tax is set to go before government ministers this month. The tax will legislate that all importers and resellers of computer and television equipment include a mandatory recycling fee at the point of sale. Local council is expected to provide curbside collection of reusable and broken electronic waste across the country for businesses and consumers. Provisions will be included to channel some reusable goods to charities and recycling organisations.

Japanese vendors wage war against slump

By Vivian Yeo, ZDNet Asia, May 05, 2009 -- Recent developments in the hardware market could suggest Japanese PC and semiconductor vendors may be losing steam, even as the global economy shows little signs of recovery. In March, NEC announced that it would pull out of the Asia-Pacific PC market. This, according to news agency Reuters, follows an earlier announcement that it would exit the Europe, Middle East and Africa market. NEC's withdrawal--only months after it launched its own netbook--joined a number of announcements by Japanese hardware companies in recent months, including job cuts at Toshiba and Panasonic and an earnings warning by consumer electronics giant Sony. In addition, Fujitsu also announced it would buy out Siemen's stake in their joint venture, while Toshiba went after Fujitsu's hard-disk drive business.

HELSINKI, May 6 (Reuters) - Personal computer sales in Western Europe grew 0.7 percent in the first quarter, with booming sales of mini notebooks balancing shrinking demand from businesses, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday. Star Trek's Warp Drive: Not Impossible

By Clara Moskowitz: 06 May 2009 -- The warp drive, one of Star Trek's hallmark inventions, could someday become science instead of science fiction. Some physicists say the faster-than-light travel technology may one day enable humans to jet between stars for weekend getaways. Clearly it won't be an easy task. The science is complex, but not strictly impossible, according to some researchers studying how to make it happen. The trick seems to be to find some other means of propulsion besides rockets, which would never be able to accelerate a ship to velocities faster than that of light, the fundamental speed limit set by Einstein's General Relativity.

@Google - @Twitter To Start Indexing Links For Search

MG Siegler, TechCrunch.com, May 6, 2009 -- Twitter Search is easily the most promising aspect of Twitter. People talk about mundane updates, or connecting with companies, or following celebrities - but that's all small scale. The real power of Twitter lies in its aggregate data. Why do you think Google and every other company out there is interested in them? It's not just because they are the hot ticket in town right now, despite what some would have you believe. It's all about the data. And Twitter knows that too - and is apparently on the verge of some interesting moves with Twitter Search that will better highlight that.
