Fujitsu Discloses Further Details About Venus Chip: Eight-Core Processor that Consumes 35W
Fujitsu Claims Venus Outperforms Itanium 2, Still Unsure About Availability -
[05/15/2009 10:02 AM] by Anton Shilov -- Fujitsu, a maker of various electronics and also a developer of microprocessors, this week disclosed some additional details regarding its Venus processor. Unfortunately, the company is still unsure about availability timeframe for the chip as well as systems on its base. According to Fujitsu, 128GFLOPs peak performance of eight-core SPARC64 VIIIfx (Venus) is 2.5 times higher compared to Intel’s top-of-the-range dual-core Itanium 2, however, even with built-in memory controller Venus consumes only 33% of what Itanium 2 uses, hence, about 35W, according to PC Watch web-site.

Fujitsu rolls out Venus,
world's fastest processor

Look out, Intel. Fujitsu just unleashed the fastest processor in the world, a startling 2.5 times quicker than Intel's speediest chip. Supercomputer users will love "Venus," the eight core processor that's capable of 128 billion computations per second. What all those numbers mean? While its 45-nanometer architecture doesn't pack its components together as tightly as Intel's latest 32-nanometer configuration, it accomplishes that world-record blistering speed while sipping one third the power of Intel's flagship chip.

Fujitsu releases Dynamic Cube and aims for place at top IT table

By: Peter Williams, Bloor Research: 13th May 2009 -- Work has continued apace within Fujitsu since its separation from Siemens at the beginning of April. The new structure, which absorbed the former Fujitsu Siemens (FSC) EMEA operations, is aimed at being far more global while new products are appearing which fit into this. For instance, around the time of the official separation, Fujitsu's ServerView Resource Coordinator (Virtual Edition) was released to unify and simplify physical and virtual server management. This week saw the release of the PRIMERGY BX800 as a foundational part of its new, green Dynamic Server Infrastructure approach (more of which in a moment).

Fujitsu in trouble with union over scrapping pension schemes

May 17, 2009 -
By IDG Staff | CIO (UK) -- Decision made to remain competitive - Labour union Unite has lambasted Fujitsu services over plans to close its final salary pension scheme to both new and long-term staff. Some 4,000 employees who are in the defined benefit pension plan have begun receiving letters from the company informing them that Fujitsu services proposes to close the final salary pension scheme and is starting a 90-day consultation process. It is highly unusual for firms to limit the pension benefits of long term employees. The final
salary scheme was running at a £1 billion deficit, a Fujitsu spokesperson told CIO
sister title Computerworld UK.

Fujitsu Investing despite downturn

Verne Burnett: May 14, 2009 -- In times of financial and economic uncertainty, wisdom dictates to some business people that they reduce costs, adopt a conservative posture and ride out the storm. Not so for the Fujitsu Group, the US$53 billion global IT provider. At a time when others are scaling back, Fujitsu is about to complete a new data centre in Port-of-Spain, through its local arm, which was renamed Fujitsu Caribbean (Trinidad) Ltd, under a recent and thorough-going reorganisation in which Fujitsu’s Caribbean business became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujitsu America.

Fujitsu shows off world's fastest CPU
Japan takes back performance crown from the USA 8 May 2009 By Duncan Geere -- Fujitsu has revealed what it claims to be the fastest chip in the world. Its new SPARC64 VIIIfx processor, which is codenamed "Venus", clocks 128 billion computations per second. It's the first time in a decade that a Japanese company has taken the fastest chip performance accolade. Venus is still in development, but it's fabricated using a 45nm process. Eight cores are crammed into two square centimetres, along with an integrated memory controller, and power consumption that's a third of rival Intel's fastest chip.

Android to power digital photo frames

May 15, 2009 by Toby Knight -- The Android continues its march to global domination (or ubiquity, at any rate) with the announcement of a digital photo frame that will run the mobile operating system. Android is everywhere at the moment - new Android smartphones are popping up like whack-a-mole and several Android-powered netbooks are in the works . The announcement of a Digital Photo Frame running Android seems a bit odd at first glance, however - but it does make a fair bit of sense on closer inspection. Fujitsu Software Technologies Ltd and Japanese firm Macnica Inc have come up with the snappily named Software Platform for Home Network Digital Photo Frame - a digital photo frame running on Android that takes the basic
photo frame idea and enhances with with home network integration, touchscreen features and some nifty photo processing.

NEC to quit Japan supercomputer project
By MARI YAMAGUCHI – TOKYO (AP) — Japanese electronics giant NEC Corp. said Thursday it will withdraw from a government-led project to produce a next-generation supercomputer, citing falling profits amid the global economic crisis. The decision could deal a major setback for Japan's ambitious plan to develop a supercomputer that is much faster than the current leader. Hitachi, who was working on NEC's contract for the project, will also have to pull out. The government-funded research institute Riken, which runs the program, said it will review the estimated 110 billion yen ($1.15 billion) project that was launched in September 2006.

Branding 102- say it out loud, at least once....

Round 2 in my rant about branding. Today's topic presents a conundrum; If you already know that- deep down- you are really bad at branding- wouldn't it be better to just give up at branding altogether?

Economistssurveyed predicted a 4.6 percent drop.

Will Your Next Netbook Be Running Android?

By Priya Ganapati * May 15, 2009 -- Google’s mobile operating system, Android, has been confined to cellphones so far. But consumer electronics makers are looking to make the new OS part of other gadgets too, such as netbooks, digital photo frames and e-book readers. “We have seen a lot of original design manufacturers in Asia show prototypes of products that run Android,” says Daniell Hebert, CEO of MOTO Group, a product development firm. “I expect to see a number of these come out this fall.” Earlier this week, two Japanese companies, Macnica and Fujitsu Software Technologies, showed off a prototype of a digital photo frame running Android.

FT.com- Trendspotter: Mechanised good reads

By Michael Fitzpatrick: May 16 2009 --
Technophobes might have moved their music collections from plastic, even vinyl, to a computer or iPod with some degree of resistance. But now comes another wrench – mechanising a good read. Sacred to some in their paper state, books are next on the list for digitising and shrinking until, space-wise, they disappear almost entirely. Thousands of titles can be squeezed on to the latest slim, paperback-sized e-readers that, thanks to clever “e-ink”, do a credible job of mimicking the printed page.

Semiconductor top 20 get a shakeup

By Sylvie Barak, 15 May 2009 -- Chip, rattle and roll - THE TOP 20 semiconductor companies have gone through a bit of a shakeup according to new numbers put out by IC Insights, which blames the credit crunch and inventory issues for most of the changes. In a summary of IC Insights' May Update to The McClean Report, the market research house reckons only three chipmakers managed to cling to their 2008 spots, as all the others got tossed around like tumbleweeds in a storm. Unsurprisingly Intel managed to retain the number one spot, while Samsung held on to second place. Fujitsu also retained its ranking at number 17.

Dealing with dilemmas

Conflicts and dilemmas come to the fore for the HR when business decisions are not in tandem with the human aspect of the role. By Vinita Gupta - The role of HR has evolved over the years from being a policy administrator to being a business partner, and this evolution has not been an easy path. More so, since they are viewed more as a policing team rather than someone who helps the organization get aligned to its goals. This mindset has changed little even today...
"The dilemma that HR personnel face is the age old one between business requirement and “human” issues. It is more from the fact that HR is taught to look at the human angle and when tough business decisions result into ‘unpleasant’ decisions that need to be executed by HR, the dilemma occurs"
- Anagha Wankar, Group Manager, HR, Fujitsu Consulting India.
