Fujitsu Develops Chip-Simulation Environment for Mobile Phones

- World's first to enable assessment of system performance of new handset models during upstream design -

Kawasaki and Tokyo, Japan, April 14, 2009 — Fujitsu Laboratories Limited and Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of a simulation environment for modeling logic system-on-chips (SoCs) used in mobile phones, that will enable for the first time ever, high-precision assessment of system performance by using software that runs on the Symbian OS(1), and at operating speeds that allow for iterated executions over a short time. By applying this assessment environment during upstream design - early design stages - of a new handset model to evaluate the system's overall performance, and by feeding this information back into the chip design process, the risk of the need for re-design can be avoided, thereby enabling an earlier start of the software development phase and resulting in lower overall development costs.

Joint J.P. Morgan and Fujitsu Consulting Australian Mortgage Industry Report, Vol 9, April 2009. Mortgage industry at significant inflection point

First home buyers urged to tread with caution

Sydney, 08 April, 2009 — First home buyers borrowing too much money at artificially low interest rates will be more sensitive to the inevitable future rises in unemployment and interest rates, according to a new mortgage industry report. The joint J.P. Morgan/Fujitsu Consulting Australian Mortgage Industry Report (Volume 9, October 2008) also explores the market share shifts taking place in the Australian market. The report stated there was no readily identifiable sustainable source of housing credit growth over the near team and while the banks will clearly continue growth at above-system levels, future market share gains will not be sufficient to sustain current levels of growth. We are seeing a significant change in the Home Lending market place.

Fujitsu Consulting Reveals Breach Involving Travelers, Other IT Clients

Apr 09, 2009 By Tim Wilson - DarkReading -- Personal information of more than 3,000 may have been lost along with storage device containing data on Fujitsu IT client projects - Fujitsu Consulting this week is informing clients that it has lost an electronic storage device containing data from "many information technology projects," including the personal data of more than 3,000 individuals held by The Travelers Insurance Co. According to a breach disclosure letter from Fujitsu Consulting (PDF), the storage device was lost in transit on July 28 by an overnight courier service that was carrying it between Fujitsu's offices in New York and Montreal. Fujitsu Consulting did not name the other companies whose data resides on the device, nor did it say whether the names were Travelers employees or customers. Reed Smith LLP, the consulting firm's legal counsel, did not say why it took eight months for the company to reveal the leak. The attorneys did say the firm has been "diligently" searching through the data for any personally identifiable information that might be on the device.

Fujitsu HandyDrive earns first place in storage space race

April 9, 2009 by Justin Yu -- Fujitsu is fairly new to the external hard drive game, but they recently hit one out of the park with the Fujitsu HandyDrive. Each hard drive that makes its way through our labs seems to get cheaper and cheaper (from a cost per gigabyte standpoint), and the HandyDrive is no different. Since Fujitsu shipped us the 400GB version for our testing, we used the current retail price of $110 to calculate a $0.27 per gigabyte cost for the end user. Compare that to the last external drive we tested, the Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile, which came out to $0.30 per gigabyte. Needless to say, budget storage fiends won't be disappointed by this device.

Fujitsu settles with CSIRO over WLAN patent

By Stuart Corner, 13 April 2009 -- Fujitsu has followed HP in reaching settlement with the CSIRO over its long running battle to extract licence fees for a key patent it holds covering the 802.11 WiFi wireless technology. According to US legal newsletter, Law360, Judge Leonard Davis of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas has dismissed with prejudice the claims and counterclaims between CSIRO and Fujitsu. Law360 notes that this represents the first court-approved settlement to emerge since the CSIRO filed suit against a number of major IT companies in 2006. However last month another of those companies, HP reached an out of court settlement with the CSIRO last month , and Apple dropped out in December 2006.

Fujitsu concedes services conflict at the high-end

By Paul Kunert, 14 April 2009 -- The new Fujitsu may be on a collision course with corporate enterprise partners that are building services businesses but has insisted the “vast majority” of resellers will not compete with its integration arm. On 1 April, the Japanese firm bought Siemens’ 50% stake in the joint venture to create Fujitsu Technology Solutions (FTS) and the plan is to align the business with Fujitsu Services to go to market under one banner. Gary Fowle, channel sales and marketing director at Fujitsu, agreed there could be instances in the corporate space where it competed with large partners but believed this would not concern resellers in the SME market.

The Australian: The global financial crisis has squeezed smaller lenders

April 15, 2009 -- BANK of Queensland chief executive David Liddy and the heads of other smaller banks have made their concerns known about the impact of the federal Government's wholesale funding guarantee on mortgage lending. Mr Liddy wants a flat fee to be charged to banks renting the AAA sovereign debt rating, in contrast to the current system under which the Big Four banks pay 70 basis points and smaller banks pay 100 or 150 basis points. The aim of the scheme is laudable. It was created to overcome market failure that saw credit markets closed to even highly rated banks, with the ensuing credit squeeze threatening to cripple the real economy. In providing the guarantee, it is appropriate that the Government levered a return for taxpayers. A flat fee would effectively amount to a subsidy for smaller banks considered riskier. On the other hand, Mr Liddy argues that a flat fee would be fairer because home lending has become a loss-making proposition for regional banks using the guarantee. This is one reason, he says "why we are not seeing all of the changes in the cash rate being passed on".

CTIA SmartBrief | 04/14/2009 -- Microsoft and Fujitsu have followed HP in resolving a critical patent-infringement dispute with CSIRO, an Australian scientists group, over its 802.11 Wi-Fi technology in a case that is before a U.S. federal court. IRS to double-check accuracy and safety of e-filings

Apr 13, 2009 -- Still finishing up your taxes? I feel sorry for you, but now I have more bad news: The Internal Revenue Service says it's getting set to ramp up the oversight of electronic filings of tax returns, particularly those made using software like TurboTax, TaxCut, and TaxAct, to make sure they aren't missing out on money they're owed. The number of people using software at home to prepare their taxes is huge, according to the Washington Post: 39 million in 2007, 66 percent of which went on to file online. And those numbers are on the rise: Intuit says TurboTax sales rose 10 percent in 2008.

BusinessWeek.com: The Fragile Flight of the Twitterlings

April 14, 2009, By Douglas MacMillan -- A flock of new companies are benefiting from the startup's rapid growth, some generating decent revenue; might Twitter opt to clip their wings? Twitter executives don't disclose much about their plans to make money from the microblogging site. But that's not stopping scores of other companies trying to build their own businesses on the back of the increasingly popular communication tool. Take Tweetie, whose downloadable software makes Twitter available on Apple's (AAPL) iPhone. Sales of the $2.99 application have been climbing "exponentially," says developer Loren Brichter.

Symantec issues latest Internet Security Threat Report

By Brandon Bailey - Mercury News: 04/13/2009 -- Hackers are finding new ways to attack unknowing computer users by taking advantage of weaknesses in Web applications and browser plug-ins, sometimes turning even legitimate Web sites into a source of malicious code, according to a report issued Monday by Symantec, the Cupertino security software company. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it’s efficient. We learn to tune out things we don’t need and go straight for what’s essential.
