Fujitsu LifeBook T2020 Set New Standard for Tablet PCs in Reviews

2009-04-15 By Frank Ohlhorst -- Can Steve Jobs really re-invent the tablet PC and make it a success for Apple? Not if Fujitsu has anything to say about it. The Fujitsu LifeBook T2020 sets a new standard for convertible notebooks. With the rumors floating around that Steve Jobs is quietly inventing Apple’s next portable device, perhaps a tablet PC, Jobs will have to crank up the creativity to beat what’s already available from other manufacturers. Although Fujitsu is one of the smaller computer manufactures and only has a small piece of the portable PC market, the company has been one of the industry leaders when it comes to tablets.

How to Get to Carnegie Hall? Audition on YouTube

YouTube's Symphony Orchestra Gathers Musicians From Around the World, Click by Click

By JOHN BERMAN and BRINDA ADHIKARI - April 13, 2009 --
Calvin Lee, a 37-year-old general surgeon from Modesto, Calif., hadn't picked up his violin in 15 years until this winter. Musicians audition by video to play in famed symphony hall. "I only really played very rarely, for weddings, and other events, such as an office Christmas party or medical school Christmas party," he said. "I am very rusty and in the process of getting my skills back." Lee decided to dust off the cobwebs from his trusty violin when he heard about "YouTube's Symphony Orchestra," a contest to form the world's first complete orchestra through open Internet auditions. "I saw it as a challenge," he said. "This was a chance to prove to myself and my old surgical friends that I wasn't just imagining things ... I actually could play."

Australia: Let us make bigger profits, say big banks

Eric Johnston - April 16, 2009 --
BANKS should be allowed to increase pricing on loans or hold onto further interest rate cuts to bolster profits in the face of a slowing economy, Australia's bank body has argued. However the proposal by the Australian Bankers Association is likely to meet a cool reception following a week of renewed criticism of banks after some refused to pass on any of the 25-basis point cut in official interest rates to mortgages. Banks are also coming under increased political pressure to provide relief to customers from a series of measures aimed at stabilising the nation's banking system.

Media Vets Try, Again, to Help Newspapers Monetize the Web

April 14, 2009 By Michael Dinan, TMCnet-- A new plan to “save” the technologically challenged newspaper industry is emerging today, according to reports, as three longtime media executives unveil plans for a computer system that will allow papers and magazines to charge for online access. According to Richard Perez-Pena of the New York Times reports that the company – Journalism Online Inc. (which apparently doesn’t have a Web site; not a good omen) – will include an all-in-one subscription for access to several publications. The company “aims to supply publishers with ready-made tools to charge Internet fees, an idea that has gained sudden currency as advertising revenue plummets, but whose prospects of success are doubted by many media analysts,” Perez-Pena reports. The product – from a company whose founders include the creator of Court TV, a former publisher of The Wall Street Journal and a communications leader – could be ready by the fall.

Colbert Treads Where No Comic Has Before

NASA Announces Results of Space Station Naming Contest on Colbert Report

By GINA SUNSERI and KI MAE HEUSSNER - April 15, 2009 -- The name Stephen Colbert will blast off into the final frontier, although not exactly in the way the comedian had hoped. After much anticipation, NASA said Tuesday it would not name the new room in the international space station after Colbert, even though he won the most votes in an online write-in contest. Instead, a treadmill will carry the Colbert name into space.

More Data Breached In 2008 Than In Previous Four Years Combined

Surprisingly, 99% of breached records were accessed through servers and applications, rather than desktop computers, notebooks, mobile phones, or portable media.

By Thomas Claburn - InformationWeek - April 15, 2009 -- More electronic records were exposed in 2008 than in the previous four years combined and most of those breaches -- nine out of 10 -- could have been easily avoided with basic preventative controls consistently applied. In its 2009 Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Business Data Breach Investigations Report, Verizon Business Security Solutions analyzed 90 confirmed breaches that occurred in 2008, affecting 285 million compromised records. The company's previous data breach report covered from 2004 through 2007, a period that saw 230 million compromised records.

From IT sales to stand-up comedy

By Natasha Lomas silicon.com on ZDNet News: Apr 15, 2009 --Did you hear the one about the CIO who thought going green was something to do with Scottish football jerseys? Or the one about the techie and his unusual second life? Or the one about the IT saleswoman who became a stand-up comedian? Gags about techies - the IT Crowd aside - aren't exactly common. But then again there aren't that many people in the IT industry that have swapped software and hardware for stand-up comedy, either. Enter stage right Thea Montgomerie-Anderson, a 32-year-old former BPM software saleswomen who sold risk management and quality management software packages to the financial and insurance sectors, and who, after being made redundant last year, has traded in her City smarts for the stand-up comic's microphone - accessorized with hot pants and heels.
