new ideas blog: Will Your Business Adapt or Die?

By derek.phillips - 2009-04-07-- The headlines have been rife with reports of one newspaper or another ceasing publication. It’s like the elephants trumpeting the death of one of their own herd and it’s getting louder as newsies struggle to find their place and a model for profitability in the age of blogs and “free” content. But what can you learn about their demise? It’s the same lesson every business learns for better or worse: adapt or die. Any business whose core is content generation has to face this fact: users expect free access to information. They want it in formats they prefer and would also like it to be portable, thank you very much. Given that any user has access to millions of pieces of data at the click of a mouse it’s no wonder he has such outrageous expectations. But there it is, so what’s a media company to do? Ensure your content is better than anyone else’s and deliver it in EXACTLY the fashion your user wants.

RBA cuts interest rates, charges of up to $50,000 to switch loans

By Richard Gluyas and Turi Condon - The Australian - April 08, 2009 --
HOME owners are expected to swamp banks trying to refinance from high fixed-rate mortgages after yesterday's 25-basis-point interest rate cut, The Australian reports. But borrowers trying to discharge high fixed-rate loans face hefty "break fees", which can be more than $20,000 on a $500,000 home loan. Fujitsu Consulting managing director Martin North said banks had reaped $899 million in home loan fees in 2007, with Fujitsu estimating this will rise to more than $1 billion this year.

Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) has set up a Web site with videos and links to information on what funds are available and how to apply.

Eyes-on with Mobintech's video headset for cell phones

Apr 6, 2009 -- Still in the prototype stage, the aptly-named Personal Display Glasses won't replace your HDTV or score you any dates. That said, the lightweight headset promises simulated big-screen mobile video for your cell phone—and all though a single cable, no battery pack required. Of course, there's nothing all that new about video headsets, and as I've written before, I'm not a huge fan of them in general. But even assuming you are willing to put up with the so-so image quality, eye strain, and public ridicule, most video headsets simply aren't practical while you're on the go thanks to all the dangling cables and bulky power bricks.

Pentagon spends over $100 million on cyberattack cleanup
April 7, 2009 by Elinor Mills --
The Pentagon spent more than $100 million in the past six months cleaning up after Internet attacks and network issues, military leaders said on Tuesday. "The important thing is that we recognize that we are under assault from the least sophisticated--what I would say the bored teenager--all the way up to the sophisticated nation-state, with some petty criminal elements sandwiched in between," Air Force Gen. Kevin Chilton, head of U.S. Strategic Command, told reporters at a cyberspace conference in Omaha, Neb., as reported by CBS News.
