Dow jumps above 8,000 for first time in 2 months

By MADLEN READ and SARA LEPRO – NEW YORK (AP) — Investors are buying up stocks again, sending the Dow Jones industrials above the 8,000 mark for the first time in nearly two months. All the major indexes soared about 4 percent on Thursday as optimism grew following more signs that the economy is on the mend. Financial stocks led the rally, getting a big boost after the Financial Accounting Standards Board relaxed accounting rules forcing banks to value their assets at current prices. The change should help banks reduce losses.

Brits build e-car friendly solar parking bay

By Alun Taylor - 2nd April 2009 -- Ideal even for the land of rains? 'Leccy Tech British manufacturer of laminated photovoltaic solar panels Romag thinks it has the answer to all those people who can't help but bang on about electric cars not really being environmentally friendly because the power they use probably comes from a monstrous CO2 belching, Gia-strangling coal-fired power station. Its answer? A solar carport than can generate juice for the EVs parked under it. Each PowerPark canopy can apparently generate 1.5kW of peak power in optimal conditions, and Romag estimates that even in the less sunny parts of the British Isles – so most of it then – each could generate up to 1100kWh of power over the course of a year.

Researchers said on Wednesday that, although infected machines did appear to contact an update server, no other activity stemming from the infections has been reported. "We had several readers contact us over the past 24 hours with some minor impact, but so far no reports of anything newsworthy," said Sans Institute researcher Marcus Sachs in a blog post.

Tankan Shows More Japanese to Lose Their Jobs, Prolonging Slump

By Jason Clenfield

April 2 (Bloomberg) -- Job prospects for Japanese workers just got worse. The Bank of Japan’s Tankan survey yesterday showed plunging demand has saddled companies with too many employees, signaling more people may lose their jobs. Rising unemployment threatens consumer spending, the strongest part of an economy that shrank an annualized 12.1 percent in the fourth quarter. “We’re running into a domestic crisis,” said Martin Schulz, a senior economist at Fujitsu Research Institute in Tokyo. “This started with exports but the infection has spread; we’re going to see another round of layoffs."
