World's Most Efficient Supercomputer Gets to Work

Martyn Williams, IDG News Service - April 02, 2009 -- Satellite launches are a noisy affair especially for the satellite atop the rocket. Vibration and noise, unless compensated, could render it useless before it reaches orbit so researchers spend a lot of time on complex computer simulations that help them insulate the delicate craft. Now those simulations are about to get much more accurate thanks to a new supercomputer that began work this week in Japan. The Fujitsu FX1 computer was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Japan Aerospace Explorations Agency. It has 3,008 nodes each of which has a 4-core Sparc64 VII microprocessor. The machine has 94 terabytes of memory and a theoretical peak performance of 120 teraflops (a teraflops is a trillion floating point operations per second).

IBM breaks off talks to buy Sun Microsystems

By Brandon Bailey - Mercury News: 04/05/2009 -- IBM has withdrawn its offer to buy Sun Microsystems for about $7 billion, but it's unclear if the deal is dead. After weeks of negotiation, the two tech giants appeared close to finalizing a deal this weekend. But IBM withdrew an offer to buy Sun for about $9.40 a share on Sunday, after Sun balked at the price and terms of the deal, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. In a major sticking point, Sun wanted more assurances that IBM would see the deal through to completion. A sale agreement could draw extensive scrutiny from anti-trust regulators, and experts say that it's not unusal for the target of a takeover bid to seek assurances that the suitor won't walk away if legal hurdles arise.

Bradley Inman wants to create great fiction, dramatic online video and compelling Twitter stream — and then roll them all into a multimedia hybrid that is tailored to the rapidly growing number of digital reading devices. Mr. Inman, a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur, calls this digital amalgam a “Vook,” (vook.tv) and the fledgling company he has created with that name just might represent a possible future for the beleaguered book industry.

Microsoft Warns Of Zero Day PowerPoint Flaw

By Stefanie Hoffman, ChannelWeb -- Microsoft issued a security advisory Thursday, warning users about a zero-day attack exploiting a critical vulnerability in Microsoft Office PowerPoint that could allow remote hackers to launch arbitrary code on their PCs. Microsoft confirmed in its advisory that exploit code was being used in the wild, but added that so far the flaw appears to be used in "limited and targeted attacks." The error affects numerous versions of Microsoft Office PowerPoint, including PowerPoint 2000, PowerPoint XP, PowerPoint 2003 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2004 for Mac. However, later versions, including Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint for Mac 2008, are not affected.
