Fujitsu Launches World’s First 1394 Automotive IC for HD Video
- Contributes to reduced costs, lighter wiring harness, and higher fuel efficiency -
Tokyo, April, 22, 2009 - Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited announced today the launch of the world’s first “1394 Automotive”(IDB-1394) controller IC that realizes high-definition (HD) (1,280 dots x 720 lines) video transmission over the IDB-1394 in-vehicle multimedia network protocol. The new IC, the MB88395, can simultaneously transmit multiple streams within the vehicle, such as HD video from Blu-ray DVDs, digital TV, audio and car navigation images. The new IC realizes this by utilizing a high-speed 800Mbps physical layer as well as Fujitsu’s proprietary SmartCODEC that provides high compression and which can transmit HD video without perceptible lag. This not only brings the rich HD experience to rear-seat entertainment, but reduces the system cost of in-vehicle multimedia networks by a maximum of 30%, while reducing the number of wire harnesses (cables) by a maximum of 70% to reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency. Sample shipment of the new MB88395 will begin from April 22, 2009.

Customers Deploy Technology for News Contribution and Other Applications

Sunnyvale, CA, April 20, 2009 —
Fujitsu and Cisco have collaborated on the creation of a highly-efficient video contribution system for use over IP or satellite infrastructures. Designed to help service providers maintain high levels of video quality at lower bandwidths, the system delivers breakthrough low-latency performance for IP video transmission. Contribution networks provide flexible and efficient mechanisms of transporting video programming from the source (such as a sports stadium) to a broadcast studio or headend. By applying IP efficiencies to processes that traditionally have relied on legacy technologies, Fujitsu and Cisco are delivering the potential for significant cost and performance benefits for both content producers and service providers. Fujitsu and Cisco are demonstrating this solution at Fujitsu’s booth SU10921 at NAB 2009 in Las Vegas, April 20-23. Forward-looking operators are using Cisco® technology to evolve their network into a medianet, a network optimized for video and rich media that is highly scalable in reach and capacity, streamlines operations and accelerates service velocity.

Fujitsu Upgrades Their FMV-Deskpower Series

We back from Fujitsu's press conference and as usual we had a very warm welcome. During this conference in a small committee, we were entitled to upgrades of PCs rather than new machines. First we have the Fujitsu F-Series with the FMV- Deskpower F/D90D, F/D70D and F/D60. As has been written in the introduction, they are mostly upgrades with the addition of a Blu-ray (only on the high end model), 1TB of HDD instead of 500GB available on the previous version, 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB, and MaxxAudio software allowing you to manage the equalizer.

Fujitsu Wind-Powered Laptop to Use Conventional Energy

That's definitely a nice marketing scheme

By Catalin Ivan, Gadgets Editor - 22nd of April 2009 -- Since it is Earth Day, I've been scouring today's press releases for something more Captain Planet-like. Since (oh, the cruel irony) I haven't found anything (up until now, that is) to fit the description, the “Planeteer” award goes to... Fujitsu and its wind-powered laptop that doesn't actually use wind power yet... it does! Thinking I've lost my marbles? Not quite. Keep on reading because this is as fascinating as it is funny. It appears that there's a lot of competition on the Japanese laptop market so Fujitsu decided it needed a new approach to what is otherwise an ordinary laptop: the FMV Loox. It seems that for each laptop sold, it will buy wind-power “green energy credits” equivalent to what it considers to be the amount of electricity consumed over a four-year period.

Sunlit Oracle Could Become Formidable Hardware Vendor

By Antone Gonsalves, InformationWeek - April 21, 2009 -- Industry analysts predict the Oracle-Sun combo will shift the balance of power in the data center software and hardware sector. Oracle (NSDQ: ORCL)'s planned $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems (NSDQ: JAVA) could make the business software maker a formidable server vendor, challenging IBM (NYSE: IBM), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), and others in delivering data center appliances of integrated software and hardware. Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison gave a peek at the future in a teleconference announcing the acquisition Monday, saying Sun's $8 billion hardware business can move Oracle from being a software company to a provider of all-in-one technology "from database to disk."
