Tokyo, April 20, 2009 — Fujitsu Limited today announced the launch in Japan of FENICS II Universal Connect, a set of new network services for the cloud computing era which can authenticate remote network users and create secure, reliable connections between them and internal corporate systems over a variety of terminals and access channels. The new services enable remote users to connect to internal corporate networks effortlessly with mobile terminals, regardless of where they are or what type of mobile device they have, and utilize internal computing systems as if they were at their own desk. With these services, corporate IT departments can use existing network assets to create remote computing environments at a far lower cost than building their own dedicated remote access networks.

Reality and Rumors: Fujitsu color e-reader to go on sale in Japan April 20

April 16, 2009 -- Where to begin? With reality, of course. Fujitsu will start selling the first color e-reader, the Frontech on Monday, April 20. The touchscreen device is available only in Japan. (Fujitsu is the first color machine, that is, if you don’t count the iPhone as an e-reader, which I mostly don’t.) The Wall Street Journal covered the Fujitsu story, which my Bangalore mobile-device expert friend, Shashank Garg, forwarded to me. The Frontech has an 8″ screen. In my opinion, this is still too small for comfortable reading of serious text. But, 8″ is far larger than the 3″ iPhone screen. I find it an interesting coincidence that iTablet (or Mac notebook or Newton rises from the death) rumors are suddenly rampant. The Wall Street Journal says that Steve Jobs has turned his attention to “a portable device that is smaller than its current laptop computers but bigger than the iPhone or iPod Touch.” This rumor goes along with the March rumor from a Taiwan for 10″ touchscreen orders for Apple (or was it parts for 10″ touchscreens, or that “ two Taiwanese companies have been selected to contribute to the device.” — Thanks, tipster Bill Bailey.

Oracle to buy Sun for $7.4 billion after IBM dropped bid

By Brandon Bailey - Mercury News: 04/20/2009 -- Just weeks after a sale to IBM fell through, Sun Microsystems said this morning that it will be acquired by Oracle in a deal worth roughly $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net after accounting for Sun's cash and debt. Oracle will pay $9.50 per share for Sun's stock, the two companies announced this morning. That is slightly higher than the price that IBM reportedly offered after lowering its bid in the days before those talks collapsed.

UK PC sales far worse than forecast Paul Kunert: 20 Apr 2009 -- Flagging sales of commercial desktops and notebooks shoved the entire UK PC market into negative growth during the first quarter, according to data released by IDC today. The UK had been forecast to decline 3%, but the severity of the economic slump has caused the market to drop 8.4% with a little over 2.8million units shipped and all but the consumer portable segment moving in the wrong direction. "Businesses have cut budgets 20% to 30% across all departments and that is impacting IT spend," said Eszter Morvay, research manager at IDC. "We expect that to continue for another six to nine months before it improves."
